The retail chocolate business is worth $13 billion a year!! Americans spend the average $725 million each Valentine's day, on candy. Which makesValentine's day 4th in candy sales holidays. The first three are, Halloween, Christmas and Easter. The first chocolate box was introduced by Richard Cadbury in 1868 when the painted his daughter holding a kitten on a chocolate container. Boston apothecaries began to sell chocolate in the mid-1700's as a health food. Tollhouse cookies (chocolate Chip cookies) were invented by Ruth Wakefield at the Tollhouse restraunt in Whitman, MA. The chocolate used in making Oreo cookies is manufactured in Mansfield, MA. Boston is the home of the hot fudge sundae. The Hershey Candy Company produces more than 33 million chocolate kisses a day. 10% of U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance of iron is found in 1 oz of baking chocolate or cocoa. Chocolate can be lethal to dogs. Theobromine, an ingredient that stimulates the cardiac muscle and the central nervous system, is what causes the toxicity. |
