Rev. Jack Edwards, pastor of the United Pentecostal Church of Pittsburg, likes to recall all the hours and love that were poured into the construction of the church by his congregation.
Rev. Jack Edwards believes in the pay-as-you-go method, and when completed, the church will be valued at $200,000. He boasts of the activities of the women in his congregation, who made lots of peanut brittle to sell to provide funds for the new construction.
“. . .it was on Feb. 18, 1957, that the first down-payment was made on the land. . .”
When they complete the sanctuary, members will concentrate on the parking area, sidewalks, and gutters. At the present time, the male members of the flock are working on the upstairs of the church, which will be made into six rooms.
Rev. Edwards, who proudly displays the original bill of sale for the church property, notes that it was on Feb. 18, 1957, that the first down-payment was made on the land, which now houses a plant, as he calls it, of 7,200 feet.
The church includes the new sanctuary, which will be dedicated some time this Spring, Sunday school rooms, and the children's church area.
Reminiscing, Rev. Edwards noted that when he first told his congregation of his plans for the church, a special collection was taken for the building fund, and with this, a new project was born.
The first church was built and has served the congregation until 1968, when the annex and new sanctuary was started. It took 11 years to complete the project. The church now seats 300, and with the combined Sunday school annex and children's church, 500 adults and children can be accommodated.
The sanctuary is carpeted down the main aisle and in back of the pulpit, where the choir sits. Paneling with lights forms the background, and directly behind the drapes, which can be opened, is the bapistry.
There are separate prayer rooms for men and women, an office and study for the pastor, and a nursery. Mothers with small children may sit in the nursery and participate in the services, as the room is sound-proofed and the entire church has an intercom system.
The church is planning to have its own library. |
