BISAYANG KUSGAN

The UPLB KAIBAN is a duly recognized varsitarian organization in the University of the Philippines at Los Baños.  It is composed of members who are bonded together by one primary link, and that is of their dialect, Bisaya.  It is the "Home away from home" for all Bisaya speaking UPLB students.

Kaiban is a Butuanon word synonymous to Kauban in Bisaya which literally means Companion; Cohort; Escort; Buddy… Friend.

This is what the Butuanon founders christened the organization that would unite all Bisaya speaking students of the University of the Philippines at Los Baños, UPLB KAIBAN.

The members of the organization are composed of Bisaya speaking students from different points in the Philippines, from Aparri to Jolo.

At present, the organization has dynamic members and is still fostering closer relationship and camaraderie, not only to their fellow Bisaya, but also to other students in the university and sponsoring activities which contribute to the betterment of the whole UPLB community.

HISTORY

On September 23, 1982, a group of students, hailing from Butuan City of Agusan del Norte, and bound by the same dialect of Bisaya, decided to form an organization with the aim of building a “Home away from home” for all the Bisaya speaking students of the University of the Philippines at Los Baños who are from Butuan City.

On the second semester of the academic year 1982-1983, the organization was formally recognized in the university, bearing the official name, UPLB KAIBAN.

A few years later, the organization's constitution was amended and the membership was expanded to all the Bisaya speaking students, no matter what province of origin.

From then on, the organization continues to pursue activities which fostered unity among its members and the developments of their total well-beings as individuals.  These activities include Pakusganay, Kasadya, and many more.

VISION

The primary goal of the UPLB KAIBAN is to unite all Bisaya speaking students of the University of the Philippines at Los Baños, to instill upon each member the unique camaraderie within the organization, develop each member’s total well being as individuals, and to contribute to the betterment of the larger community.

And above all that, the organization simply wants to create a "Home away from home" for all Bisaya speaking students of UPLB.

SEAL

The official colors of the organization is yellow, green, white, and blue.

The official seal consists of two similar rectangles, one inside the other.  The central figure is a dove and a man holding a book.  Inscribed between the two rectangles is the name of UPLB KAIBAN, the year 1982, and two dots.

The dove stands for freedom, peace and unity among its members and their pursuit to achieve common goals and interest.  The man represents the members of the organization.  The book  represents the academic aspects through which the organization's goals are conceptualized and eventually realized.  The outer rectangle represents the four corners of the Philippine society: educational, social, political and religious aspects.  The inner rectangle represents the organization struggling to reach out to the institution.  The two dots represent the organization's objectives and principles, and the year 1982 represents the year when the organization was founded.

RECRUITMENT

Being in college is an enjoyable experience, but it is more exciting if it is loaded with extra-curricular activities.  For one can never completely learn about life within the four walls of the classroom.

And what is better than joining an organization that continually sponsors beneficial activities, upholding the cause of Bisayan unity, and has members who helps each other and who care.

If you are a Bisaya speaking student of University of the Philippines at Los Baños, why not join the only organization who welcomes you wherever you may come from?

There may be other varsitarian organizations out there, but they require you to be of some place of origin.  Think about it, if you could have brothers and sisters from different parts of the country instead of just one place, then it can really expand your horizon, as well as your group of friends.  Won't you be proud to have a friend in Visayas when you are from Mindanao?

Sure, there are fraternities, sororities and academic organizations out there, but isn't the strongest bond that of your kinsman?  If you are a Bisaya, then you will naturally be more comfortable with a person whom you can truly communicate with.

Kung Bisaya ka, diba mas ayos kung brod ug sis nimo, Bisaya pud?  Nindot kaayo!

Join UPLB KAIBAN now!  Apil na!  You won't regret it.

The organization is always open for recruitment, even in the summer semesters of UPLB.  The organization's tambayan is near the College of Human Ecology building.  See a white square tambayan?  That is the famous tambayan of the UPLB KAIBAN.  Just approach any member, and he/she will surely help you and will answer any doubts and curiosities that you may have.
