EM11E – The Green Island(DN-018)

“Radio amateurs represent a powerful movement that have let thousands of enthusiasts spending their free time on technical equipment take part in radio experiments” Academician S. N. Vavilov.

Under the International Program «Ukraine's Islands on Air» the first stage of the expedition through Ukraine's islands on the Dniper River, to the Green Island in Dnepropetrovsk region, took place on May 1 – 7, 2002. The expedition stage was organised by Law Academy of Internal Affairs (Dnepropetrovsk City). The information and technical support was provided by 11 TV Channel. That wasn't by chance – the special call sign numbers comprised 11 and the call sigh EM11E had never appeared on-the-air before. «Such a well-organised expedition hasn't been held for a long time»,- Hams said. The call sigh EM11E was already being waited for on May 1, as the in-formation about the action had been announced in INTERNET in advance. The expectations have been justified. The avangard group had not only equipped well the portable station, but worked a great deal of QSOs by that time. The action started on May 2: when the yacht «Musson» took the expedition main members to the Green Island. The work stations were not enough to let all the participants operate on-the-air (they were 40), so the priority had been given to the best ones - UX5FZ (E. Voloshin), on air since 1949; family dynasties U5EX and US5EX (Vladimir and Nicolay Kachan – father and son); UR5EDX and UV5EDX (Sergey and Tatyana Grachevy – a married couple); the participant of two Antarctic expeditions at “Bellensghousen” station - 4K1F (UT4EF Yury Chernikov); the Law Academy Information Sciences and Specialised Equipment Department Chief, Doc-tor of Technical Sciences, professor V. Vishnia; the leaders of the expedition – 11 TV Channel representative UR5EKE (A. Mosolov), UR5EAW (A. Shevchenko, QSL manager), A. Ocheretny. The youngest participant of the expedition was just 8 years old (he was the son of Nikolay Fetishtchev (UR7EO)) and those were his first QSOs on the Green Island. The total amount of the contacts operated to all the continents (except Antarctica) exceeds 4500 (2m and 6m bands included). The more detailed data are shown on the continental contacts list. The second expedition stage is to be held on the historic Porohovoy Island in June this year.
