This is the outfall of the Bee Branch Tunnel, largest tunnel under Dubuque, Iowa, to the Mississippi River. This photo was taken during my Spring Break vacation in 1992, which I spent wallowing on subterranean sandbars rather than on those at Daytona Beach. I parked my white rental car above the outfall for scale. Dubuque is riddled with abandoned 19th-century lead workings, and by following the storm drains you can access several of the largest old lead mines, such as Level Crevice. Other mine entrances may be found in the abandoned quarries, or by driving around town (especially when the leaves are off) and observing the gated entrances. |
