The River Des Peres, a major subterranean feature of St. Louis. William Burroughs, one of the city's best-known writers, grew up on its banks, and dubbed it the "River Despair." This is a view of the Macklind Avenue entrance to the system. The opening on the right leads to University City (sanitary), while that on the left leads to Forest Park (stormwater). The date 1928 graces the arch. Enter the system at Heman Park, exit here, and return via Metrolink. Hopefully no one will notice that you stink. Downstream from this point it's all open channel, and you can walk it to the Mississippi River, noting the "elephant heads" on the banks along the way, structures where tributaries disgorge to the main channel.. |
