Magic
The runes were and are used for magical and religious purposes.  They are used through galdr (a form of chanting/singing), charms, and in many other ways.

What I can and will say about rune magic and magic in general concerns ethics.  To do magic and use the runes generally means that you are altering the fabric of life.  We are allowing ourselves to meddle with the weaving the norns are doing in our every day lives.  We do not live in a vacuum, and what we do in any situation effects our outer surroundings.  Think about a butterfly's wings triggering a hurricain, and you will get the gist of what I am trying to stress here.

Learning magic means a whole lot of work.  This being said, I would like to recommend a book by Jan Fries called "Visual Magick" which is published by Mandrake of Oxford.  It is an excellent book for beginners and more advanced magic practicioners, and the methods are not only good for general magic theory , but are easily adaptable to rune practice.

Secondly I would recommend reading both the Havamal and Egil's saga as they both will give you a lot of information to work with as far as learning more traditional runic magic.

Good luck, and please be aware of how you effect the world with your actions, both above and below.
