I'm always told that one of the most important things is to "keep things in context, keep things in context," and yet how can you put things in context in Proverbs when there is no context?
Imagine your father were to send you one
letter in his life. And he had to transmit to you all his wisdom
and what he has learned from his experience. Well, that's what
Solomon under the Holy Spirit's direction does here. Solomon had
the privilege of writing one inspired book for Holy Writ and this
is it. The wisdom of the wisest man that ever lived.
If you keep in mind that Proverbs 1:1-6 is the context of the
whole book your reading will be much easier. For example, notice
the first few verses where Solomon wants his son to know wisdom,
instruction, understanding, justice, judgment, equity and so on.
You see, beginning in verse 7 you have the statement that:
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge."
Now, as you read you will find tremendous coherence and harmony
in Proverbs. Also notice that there is always a distinction
between the wise and the fool. Those who fall into sin and those
who don't. The consequences of obedience and disobedience.
Another thing you will like to keep in mind as you read Proverbs
is that there is doctrine in it. Yes, doctrine! For instance,
look in chapter 8 where wisdom is said to be a person. Especially
verse 12 which says: " I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, And
find out knowledge and discretion." As you keep reading you
will find that several descriptions of wisdom may fit the person
of Christ specifically beginning in verse 22 through 36.
In conclusion, one must also see the fulfillment of Proverbs
which comes in Proverbs 31. Notice that all the characteristics
named in chapter 1 are fulfilled in the "Proverbs 31
woman." She is virtuous, her worth far beyond rubies, her
husband trusts her, she does good not evil and so on. It's a
beautiful book filled with timeless truth and wisdom. Read one
verse at a time and always come before the text with your heart
prepared.

very helpful as you study Scriptures.
