A note from the editor: The Westminster Shorter Catechism was completed in 1647 by the Westminster Assembly and continues to serve as part of the doctrinal standards of many Reformed churches. I pray that you may have a greater appreciation for the glory of God as you study these questions and study each verse carefully. Every week a new question will be added. If you wish to read these verses in other translations go to my homepage and type the verse in the Biblegateway box.

Westminster Shorter Catechism
Question 52

Q: What are the reasons annexed to the second commandment?
A: The reasons annexed to the second commandment are, God's sovereignty over us,1 his propriety in us,2 and the zeal he hath to his own worship.3

  1. Psalm 95:2-3. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
  2. Psalm 45:11. So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.
  3. Exodus 34:14. For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
