In 1954, Delta Zeta adopted Gallaudet College (now University) in Washington, D.C. as their national philanthropy benefactor. This is the only educational institution in the world devoted exclusively to educating the deaf and has a primary school, a secondary school, and an institution of higher learning. Originally, our project was to help furnish the school library; this was accomplished by 1960. As the cost of Gallaudet increased, so did the need for assistance in other fields. Delta Zeta will continue to assist Gallaudet as long as there is a need, and this will fulfill our committment to the philanthropic goals to support the speech and hearing impaired.

It is interesting to note that the first woman to earn her degree from Gallaudet, Agatha Plegal, was the class valedictorian of the 1893 graduating class. She is the mother of 1981's Delta Zeta Woman of the Year and Kappa chapter member, Alice Hanson Jones.
In 1983, another philanthropy benefactor, which had been assisted by Delta Zetas locally, was added to our Speech and Hearing Help program. The House Ear Institute in Los Angeles is dedicated to research and to training ear specialists in newer methods of diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the ear.
