Tribal battle in Papua province leaves one dead, 51 injured
In Indonesia's easternmost province of Papua, a two-day tribal battle has left one man
dead and more than 50 injured.
Rights activist, Dias Gwijangge, says the 22-year-old man died after paramilitary
police opened fire to quell the fighting, which began Tuesday in the Kwamki Lama
area near Timika town.
The AFP new agency says police have confirmed the death but have not given details.
The Jakarta Post has quoted local police chief, Rhinto Prastowo, as saying the fresh
violence was sparked by unpaid compensation, following deaths during tribal clashes
in June.
Two people from each side were killed in that violence.
The police chief is quoted as saying the latest flare-up was apparently an attempt to
get the local district council to pay the compensation for the deaths.
