Routine Blood and Urine Tests

SPECIAL TESTS
:ULTRA(SOUND)-SCAN
; Involves drinking about 4-5 glasses of water about two hours before the appointed time and going to the scan with a reasonably full bladder. done to assess the size of the Kidneys, Bladder volume, Prostate size, degree of emptying of the bladder and any other obvious abnormality in the urinary tract. Usually takes about 10-15 minutes to perform.TRANS RECTAL SCAN (TRUS) ( +/- BIOPSY)
: Done only in specific circumstances when any serious pathology is suspected in the Prostate. Performed on a reasonably empty Bladder by insertion of a finger like Probe into the rectum (back passage) and viewing fine details on the Prostate and seminal vescicles on the tv monitor. May be combined with a BIOPSY if any serious pathology is suspected.Prostate Specific Antigen(P.S.A)
: A blood test performed to check levels of an enzyme protein, which is abnormally raised in presence of malignancy in the prostate and severe inflammation. Interpretation of the results require a Urologist; therefore patient must not be alarmed looking at the reference values.Intra Venous Urography(I.V.U)
: A specialized X-ray investigation requiring a Bowel preparation with medications for 2 days to clear the bowels and the gas in the intestines. Involves injection of a X ray contrast material into the veins, followed by taking of some x ray images. PLEASE NOTE: Patients with high incidence of allergy, asthma, food allergy to Fish and sea food must warn the doctor accordingly so that necessary precautions can be taken to avoid a severe allergic reaction. If obstruction is present, it may take a few hours; routine IVU takes about 45 minutes only.A specialized test involving passing urine into a electronic toilet which traps the urine and measures the volume passed, the peak and average rate of passing of urine and the time taken to pass the urine. May often be combined with the Ultra scan, to assess the presence of obstruction due to the prostate.
