He received the King's favor in 1692 for opening the dirt road that connected the Provinces of Yucatan and Guatemala. To achieve the final objective of connecting by land the provinces of the Atlantic Coast with those of the Pacific, in order to promote commercial relations between the provinces, the colonization or acquisition of the tribes of the Itzas Indians (which was proving difficult and took several frustrated attempts) became necessary. At the beginning of 1697 an expeditionary body was organized by Martin de Ursúa Arizmendi and started off for the unknown, with the resolution to finish the unfinished expedition to the country of the Itzacas Indians, or to die trying. They arrived at a great lake and in order to cross it they constructed ships and later they arrived at an island. After a thousand eventful journeys they joined a terrible and decisive combat with the crowd of Indians who defended their capital, and after two days of battle, in which half his people were killed, they took the island and the city and captured the main native chiefs and King Kanek, that soon, like most of its subjects, was converted to Christianity, being baptized under the sponsorship (padrinazgo) of Ursúa.
