What's New

Taiwan

[Flag of Taiwan]USI has admitted a new Member, the Union Society of Taiwan, which advocates that this island off the coast of mainland China become the 51st State of the United States.

David Chou of Taipei established this group years ago, and one of USI's Charter Members, the Expansionist Party of the United States ("XP"), received a letter from him in 1994. Altho XP's Chairman thinks he sent a reply, he never heard back and did not pursue the matter until recently. He did a search via Google.com, but had remembered David's last name as "Chang" so was unable to locate him. Coincidentally, however, David Chou around the same time did a search thru Google for statehood organizations, located XP, and sent email to reconnect!

David reports that both the Taiwanese and Communist Chinese governments are extremely hostile to his proposal, and both have acted to thwart it thru intimidation, interference, and even hacking the UST website. This may explain why XP Chairman Schoonmaker's letter never got thru.

Altho UST has a website (www.51state.org), (a) it is mainly in Chinese (if that is not a problem for you, enjoy!), tho there are some areas (not readily accessible from the home page) in English, and (b) problems keep occurring. For instance, for at least two weeks now (at November 3, 2002), traffic to 51state.org has been redirected to a friendly but separate organization, "Taiwan for USA" — which USI hopes also to draw into membership if it develops English-language materials that USI can review to check for compatibility with USI's goals.

David Chou has advised that he is preparing an English-language presentation for inclusion in the USI site. Once he has drafted it, USI's webmaster will help finalize and upload it.

Polls

At the outset, USI had a number of Internet opinion polls which, alas, were destroyed when the company that provided them, Freepolls.com, decided to start over from scratch and deleted all its older polls. Being pressed for time, USI's webmaster was for months unable to investigate what was involved in restoring these polls, but has now completed the rebuild. There are two polls on the issue of British accession to the Union (one for Britons and one for Americans); three polls on Puerto Rico statehood (one for island-dwelling Puerto Ricans, one for mainland-dwelling Puerto Ricans, and one for non-Puerto Rican Americans); and three polls on Philippine statehood (one for island-dwelling Filipinos, one for mainland-dwelling Filipinos, and one for non-Filipino Americans).

In addition, the issue of Canadian accession to the Union is addressed in two polls at the Expansionist Party's "Private Action for Canadian-U.S. Union" page. We encourage every appropriate person to respond to these polls. There is a place for brief comments at the end of each poll. Longer comments should be directed to the Webmaster. If there be sufficient response, we will create a page for visitor remarks, and ask anyone who writes something worthy of sharing if we can post their remarks to that page.
