Broken Arrow
Nuclear Weapons Accidents

After nearly two years of research, Jim Oskins and Mike Maggelet have produced the most comprehensive unclassified study of 36 known U.S. nuclear weapons accidents, known as "Broken Arrows".

Sorting through the hundreds of pages of documents was a difficult task, given the poor quality of reproduced air accident reports, sanitized government documents, explosive ordnance disposal records, and photographs.

The authors spent thousands of hours reviewing the material and transcribing selected portions in an easy to read format that supplements the original Department of Defense narrative summaries. The 1980 DOD narrative was compiled in two months, which explains why some material was overlooked.

Additionally, they have reproduced copies of reports proving that the Tybee bomb (a Mark 15 Mod 0) does not pose a nuclear detonation hazard, and that a purported nuclear weapons accident at RAF Greenham Common never occured.

Four accidents declassified in 1983 by Field Command, Defense Nuclear Agency, at Johnston Island in 1962 are also highlighted.

New details regarding the loss of a P-5M aircraft off the Oregon coast, and the loss of the USS Scorpion are presented from material declassified in 1993.

The book also contains a chapter on nuclear weapons safety devices, and a chapter on several suspected Broken Arrows (some of which are shown to be "Bent Spears", others which did not include nuclear weapons nor nuclear materials).
