HISTORY
The Texas Tower Association was formed because a group of people -- veterans of service on the Towers and some interested family members -- set out to locate others who were also linked to the Towers in some way. This group located many veterans as well as surviving wives and children of veterans. By the spring of 1999, a Charter Membership was organized under the leadership of Ken Taylor, MSGT (Ret), Veteran of duty on Tower 3. The organizers included some of the families of those who died in the collapse of Tower 4, several researchers, and the military and civilian veterans of Tower duty or service. Each contacted person usually provided names and information about someone they knew and many worked diligently to locate addresses for names remembered but location lost. Mae Robertson Farrow, daughter of one of the Tower 4 lost, served as secretary, and she developed skills in locating people. Mrs. Taylor served as treasurer and kept track of the Charter Membership donations. By the summer of 1999, plans were completed for a reunion, formal adoption of By-Laws, election of officers, and for a memorial service to present flags to the families or their representatives for those lost while serving on the Towers. This meeting was held in September in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The By-Laws were adopted, an election was held, and the first slate of officers included: President -- Don Abbott, Vice-President -- Ken Taylor; Secretary -- Mae Farrow; Treasurer -- Pat Taylor. The Association was incorporated as a 501-c Non-profit organization in early 2000, registered in Colorado, By-Laws filed, and it remains so to date. There was an initial reunion in 1999 in Colorado Springs Colorado, and subsequent ones were held at Cape Cod in 2000, in Idaho in 2001, on Cape Cod in 2002, and in Hampton Virginia in 2003. The next one is in Las Vegas in 2004. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ REUNION TIME IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER -- SEPTEMBER 26. MEET YOUR FELLOW TOWERMATES AT THE EXCALIBUR HOTEL AND SPEND A FEW DAYS WITH THEM EXPLORING VEGAS AND THE SURROUNDING AREA. HENRY PAPE, Texas Tower Association President, has been in contact with the EXCALIBUR HOTEL which tells him reservations are coming in, but there is always room for more Towermates. There has been no limit set on number of rooms allotted. A CRUISE ON LAKE MEADE and attending an entertainment evening at the hotel are on the agenda, plus the business meeting/Banquet and election of new officers. This is also the time to be thinking of which members you'd like to see as officers of our great Texas Tower Association -- time to think who would best serve our Association, be actively involved. and can communicate throughout the year with the membership. If you want to be nominated, if you have a name to place in nomination, or if you want to make a comment, please contact one of your board members or e-mail Jane Shaffran, shaffran@webtv.net, or Bev Mendoza, sambevm@sbcglobal.net, to pass on your information. THIS IS THE TIME WE THE MEMBERS GET INVOLVED AND STEP UP TO THE PLATE TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN IN 2005. ............................... WE ARE HAPPY TO REPORT THAT SECRETARY MAE FARROW is off chemo and doing very well. She and her friendly smile will definitely be at the upcoming reunion. This has been a rough year for Mae and Bob Farrow but with prayers and their positive attitude plus the many well-wishers rooting Mae on they have succeeded. PRAYER DOES WORK! .............................. The Farrow's son Christian who is also a member is back in Afghanistan. While at it, PRAY FOR OUR TROOPS in the areas of conflict. ................................................ MEMBERSHIP DUES are the same as in the past -- $10 for a SINGLE PERSON or $15 PER COUPLE. YOUR DUES KEEP THE ASSOCIATION GOING. Remember, you must be a paid-up member to vote in the TTA election. Send your checks to Treasurer CHRISTINA MERRILL (daughter of Frank and Joan Palumbo). Christina is a CPA and is doing a great job. She also has a daughter in the Army heading for the Mideast. ADDRESS: Mrs. Christina Merrill 2317 Georgetown Pl Bellevue, NE 68123-1050 |
