Basically a longer version of the Essex class, the Ticonderoga class is often included with the Essex; the only major difference being a fifteen foot difference in the length of the flight deck. There were the most produced class of fleet aircraft carriers in the US Navy, and like the Essex class, served for many years, serving well into the 1970's. Seven were cancelled at the end of World War II, and all but one commissioned Ticonderoga class carrier has been scrapped, with the Oriskany pending disposal.
