  • January 11- John C. Calhoun introduces a bill to congress which would create the second National Bank of the United States. The bill passes with support of Speaker of the House, Henry Clay.


  • March 20- Supreme Court says that it as the power to review decisions by state courts in the Judiciary Act of 1789, show in the outcome of Martin vs. Hunter's Lessee.


  • April- Congress banns foreign citizens from American fur trade.


  • April 27- The Tariff Act of 1816 is passed in Congress with support of John C. Calhoun and Henry Clay.  The tariff is placed on pig iron, wool, textile, leather, paper, and other goods.


  • May 10- Fort Howard is established in Green Bay to be the fur trade center for the Illinois Territory.


  • July 27- US troops move into Spanish Florida and take an old British fort, Fort Apalachicola, where Seminole Indians where helping slaves escape the US.


  • December 4- James Monroe wins the presidential election over Rufus King, with 183 electoral votes.


  • December 11- Indiana is admitted into the union as a free state, making it the 19th state.
