1822

  • Denmark Vessey was a slave who bought his freedom by winning the lottery. After he was free he wanted his family and all other slaves to be free so he started a conspiracy plan. The plan called for 3,000 slaves on June 16, 1822 to rebel, break into the arsenals in Charleston, kill every white person and burn the city to the ground. However, authorities found out and Vessey and his followers where hung.

  • The northwest boundary between US and Britain had come under dispute during this time. The original boundary, set by the Treaty of Paris was set for Lake of Woods to the Mississippi River. However over time both countries wanted the Oregon country and they shared it jointly, but in 1822 the Concention of Commerce set the division of the area at the 49th parallel.
