...page two
On this page we have another re-labelled slide rule, but this time its a circular one! This is a CONCISE / SIC 300B. In the scan at left, we see the slide rule itself with its case, and the thin, white box in which they came. Note the scale labels and range data on the cursor, this time in red, but otherwise very much like the cursors on their straight rules.
As far as I know, this was CONCISE'S largest, most powerful slide rule. This is the only CONCISE type that I am sure was sold by SIC, though it is likely that there were others. Other than the cursor, it is a "standard" 300 for its age. Later 300's have additional red inverse numbers on their trig scales not seen on this rule. The instructions which came with it are standard CONCISE, with no SIC on them at all.
The item above this text box is a scan of one side of the enclosed warranty card. On this card you filled in the type and purchase date of your rule, along with its serial number. Many SIC rules had serial numbers, though this 300B does not, nor do several other earlier SIC straight rules I own. Your warranty was "activated" upon sending in this card. Probably activated a blizzard of junk mail too, but who cares!
SIC certainly did offer a variety of big powerful slide rules. This 300B is no slouch for a circular, not at all. And with accuracy better than a 10 inch rule too! But it wasn't the only circular they offered. Several circular rules, alike in scales to some of the Pickett circulars, were available, made in Japan. I believe the maker sold these rules under their own brand name of "STAR". As implied above, they made circulars in yellow for Pickett, and these circulars command some of the highest prices on E-Bay.
Next in our SIC company gallery we have some slide rules from the collection of Mr. Steve Kay. A fellow slide rule enthusiast and collector of Relay/Ricoh rules, he has an impressive assortment, which he was kind enough to share via some photographs of selected rules. (Also, see Relay/Ricoh gallery page 5 for more rules from Mr. Kay!)
Below, the rarely seen (and mint in box and bag, UNOPENED, as we see here) SIC 1520, a re-badged Ricoh 152. This is the unequal length stator original form of the 252, usually seen in the US as a LUTZ brand rule. These are on of the LEAST common SIC rules, oddly the more powerful log-log 1530 series rules are much more often seen. Not only is the SIC form rare, but the 152 is exceedingly rare here.
