On the way back from our hike to Andrews Bald, we spotted a large wildflower patch along the road, a wonderful target for my SLR camera. The patch was photographed from almost every angle. The primary elements comprising the patch were Bee balm (Monarda didyma), a bright crimson member of the mint family, and Gray-headed coneflowers (Ratibida pinnata). Both plants, native to the southern Appalachians, incidentally happened to contrast very well with one another.
