UTET HISTORY

The Equestrian Team at UT Austin was officially founded in the Spring of 1988. At that time, UT Austin was the only Texas School that was a member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). Due to this fact, the equestrian team had to compete in another IHSA region which included Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, and Illinois. This continued through the end of the Spring semester of 1989. In the fall of 1989, Texas was granted its own Region status with the IHSA. It was at that time that several more Texas schools joined the IHSA. At its founding, the equestrian team was totally self-supported with no monetary help from The University. Since then, the team has been granted recreational sport status.

The team's debut was at the Middle Tennessee State University IHSA show in March of 1988. Although only four UT equestrians competed, they captured the high point rider award. Since this time, UT equestrians have found success at both National and International competitions. UT riders have competed not only in the United States but also in Germany, Holland, Ireland, and Canada under the auspices of the International Intercollegiate Equestrian Team.
