Top Ten Role Playing Games of All Time

Since the end of school has arrived and I’m already well on y way to Hell I thought a decisive
ranking of the greatest video game RPGs of all time would be in order because they are the end all, be all of
time wasters (except those cleverly addictive paper and pencil ones like D&D). I mean, what greater
medium for lethargy is there? You get a story told to (well, you have to read it), there none of that vexing
imagination thing going on since all the pretty pictures are one screen, and leveling up consists of a few
button presses, that’s right, none of that pesky dice rolling. What could be better than that? (A real game of
D&D you bastards. Why won’t anyone play with me?) Anyway, here goes:

10. Dragon Warrior/ Quest – Some may say the best series of all time is being placed last, but it’s neither
last nor the best, it’s tenth. It does get credit for being the first incarnation of the modern day video game
RPG though.

9. Landstalker – The only Genesis, hell, any console, action-Rpg that had Zelda Beat (except the other
Zeldas, of course).

8. Phantasy Star IV: End of the Millenium – This multitudinously titled epic was the end of the greatest
Role- playing undertaking by Sega (until that damn online crap, bastards).

7. Wild ARMs – A surprise hit in the year of FF7 (1997), and it had a great story line too. Unfortunately, at
twenty-some hours it was rather transitory.

6. Final Fantasy Tactics – Dubbed the greatest strategy-RPG by many others and me. It includes an epic
story line and a killer soundtrack.

5. FF6 – Some call the greatest of all time, the pinnacle of Final Fantasies, but I simply call it number five.

4. Lunar: Eternal Blue – The SEGA CD classic that was reborn on the PSX deserves a spot solely for its
innovative battle system… and maybe those anime cut scenes with impeccable voice-acting.

3. Final Fantasy – The original makes an appearance. w00t! w00t! This game truly made sure Edrick was
dead (for those of you who don’t know, Edrick was the protagonist of Enix’s Dragon Quest, Square only
true competition).

2. Chrono Trigger – Time hoppin’ an’ sword fightin’ make for an interesting game. And it had replay value
through the roof. How many endings did this thing have? And New Game+ was sheer genius.

1. Xenogears – Innovative Battle system, deep characters, giant robots, a battle against an evil religion
(which was similar to Christianity. Well, actually, more just Catholicism, really). What more could you
ask for? If you said anime with horrid voice acting, 80 hours of gameplay (yeah, that’s right 80) and
maddeningly difficult (cheap) bosses you’re in luck. This is, in fact, the greatest RPG of all time. Let’s
hope the prequel can hold a candle to the original.

These great wasters of time should fill your summer hours of sloth quite easily, and it won’t be at all
boring either. Have fun.

Will someone please play D&D with me?
