Nerds

Am I talking about those delightful little candies or the guys from “Revenge of the Nerds”? The
“revenge” guys of course, well, sort of. I’m talking about real nerds. There are many of them now and with
the blurred (if any) lines between cliques these days nerds are difficult to spot yet they are ever extant and
are an integral part of society. Because of this they are deserving of a little recognition and I, an ever so
humble nerd, intend to distinguish them.
First of all I’d like to clarify one thing. Nerds and geeks are different. Though they may seem
similar to the untrained eye they are really not. Geeks are a dirtier dumber counterpart of nerds (not really a
counterpart but that’s the only way I can explain it). Geeks are those guys that talk about video games,
computers, comics and other non-mainstream things but don’t really know much about them, where on the
other hand nerds are experts in their respective areas of choice. To sum it up geeks are like those who think
video games and D&D are really cool but really suck at them.
Now on to the good stuff. Nerds traditionally smart and picked on because they were and have
usually been very unpopular. That’s sort of true for me because, quite frankly, I’m a loser but for others
that’s not the case.  Many nerds today are praised for their intelligence and are very popular (just look at the
top 25 ranked people). Times have changed and many nerds are being venerated for their efforts and
contributions to society.
Okay this is getting kind of long so I’ll finish up. This new generation of  “cool” nerds enjoy many
things. Many nerds nowadays are enrolled in sports and are quite good at them (unlike me). There are also
the music nerds. You know, the guys in band or chorus or that have their own band. They’ll expose their
nerd sound to numerous new audiences. Other than these “cool” nerds there are the standard D&D, board
game and video game nerds. I, being one, have to say that it’s not bad (other than the almost total lack of a
social life), it’s actually pretty nice. You learn new words and skills (though unnecessary ones) plus you
immerse yourself in deep stories and enthralling quests all without leaving your home. Since I’ve been
ranting about nerds for so long let’s end with a quote from myself “nerds are an integral part of society”
and that is so true.
