Club History

Little is known at present about the roots of the club, except to say that in the 1991-92 season the club became the first UWIC side to reach a final of the then UAU  Championships. The final was, as like many others to follow won by Loughborough. For many years after this brief success women's rugby was very low key at the university and the club played second fiddle in Wales to Cardiff University throughout much of the 90's.

However in 1996 the club reached the quarter finals of the now BUSA Championships only to lose to the eventual winners Edinburgh. The club suffered the same fate in 1998, this time the victors and eventual winners were Oxford. In 1999-2000 a more disciplined approach was taken to the sport which reaped immediate rewards with the club reaching the BUSA final, again only to lose 10-15 to Loughborough.

Since the 2000-2001 season UWIC and Loughborough have enjoyed an top class rivalry, the technical defeat in the 2001 Semi Final to Loughborough (A 19-19 draw so UWIC lose on try count) will long live in the memory of those players involved.

Success came in 2002 with their first BUSA win, a 23-7 win over Loughborough. This was bettered by the 2003 victory in which UWIC came from behind in the closing minutes to secure their second trophy. UWIC followed their 15 a-side win with the the BUSA 7's trophy 4 days later to complete a memorable double.

In 2003-04 Loughborough gained the upper hand as they won back the BUSA Championship with a strong 17-7 win, and it was a double blow as UWIC came runners up in the 7's losing out to Bath University.
