Tabling: tabling at UW isn’t necessarily the best means of accomplishing your goals, however, in cases where you’re trying to sell tickets for an event, or just get your face out there, the lobby of the Memorial Union, as well as residence hall dining rooms are the best place to be. Library Mall isn’t a bad place to start at the beginning of the year, but in general, tabling (in the traditional sense) is not going to be a large part of your time here.

Residence Halls: residence halls are the best place to “meet students where they’re at”. At UW, so many of the residence halls do a wonderful job of programming for their students, that in order to reach the masses, you have to a) be creative. Chadbourne, for instance, does over 40 programs a month- you have to do something that hasn’t been done! And b) bring it to them! The best way to reach students needs to be accessible and have an easy “escape route”. I learned quickly that students need to feel safe in their environment, and further- need to feel that they aren’t obligated to stay and can make a dignified exit!

Library Mall: When it’s warm, the lower block of State St. and Library Mall are the place to be! I wish I had taken advantage of it more this year, but for future reference- you will run into the students you’re trying to call and email on Library Mall far faster than you will actually get them on the phone!

Campus organizations/leadership:

Resident Advisors/House Fellows: a great way to connect yourself with the first-year students is to make a connection with a Jewish Resident Advisor in the public halls. For the 2003-2004 school year, we know of at least 3 students who are active participants at Hillel who will be RA’s in the public residence halls. These students will be a vital tool in reaching out to Jewish first-year’s in residence halls. This year, I worked closely with a Jewish House Fellow (same thing as an RA- just the term they use in some of the residence halls here) at Chadbourne Residential College to plan and implement engagement programming there. Our relationship was mutually beneficial; I brought her ready-to-go programming, and she helped me connect with more students in the building- she was an automatic “in”.

Center for Jewish Studies: Hillel has a very positive working relationship with the CJS- be sure to connect with Anita Lightfoot who is the administrator there. She can be infinitely helpful in letting you get publicity and information out to students taking classes there.

Wisconsin Union Directorate Community Service Committee: This year we teamed up with the Community Service committee to co-sponsor a day of community service around Madison. The idea came after Hillel and the CSC ran almost-identical community service events last year, within a week of each other.
