When I was in the application and matching process for the JCSC Fellowship, I really had no understanding of what a vital role my supervisor would play in my experience. This was going to be my first job out of college, and it didn’t really occur to me that supervision could (and should) be more than a watchdog.
Jamie Berman supervises both fellows at UW-Hillel, and does a fantastic job helping us acclimate personally and professionally. One of Jamie’s best qualities as a supervisor is that she sees her work with us as an integral part of her daily job; not a side note.
Jamie and I met each Tuesday at 10am for 1-2 hours. We each came prepared with an agenda; questions we had concerning my student groups and programming, and with updates on ongoing and upcoming projects.
Your time with Jamie can be one of the most productive and meaningful parts of the fellowship- Jamie really embraces her role as a supervisor and mentor and gives relevant and useful advice on anything—professionally and personally.
Supervision is one element of the JCSC Fellowship that really differentiated it from other jobs in the field for me. You are simultaneously given the rights and responsibilities of any other full-time professional, while having the built-in support and guidance of someone with a great deal of experience. |
