| I was lucky enough to discover rugby. I played for the University of Wisconsin Womens Rugby Football Club my last semester at UW. I played New Zealand for the University of Otago club. There is a HUGE difference between rugby in the US and rugby in New Zealand. In the US it's a sport most people stumble apon, while in New Zealand, everyone is brought up with it. Some of the attitudes are the same though: go hard, play hard, then afterwards party hard with the opposing team. I got a rugby-themed e-mail from my first coach, Trie (awesome woman, by the way), it was a forward from somewhere, but it had a great quote at the end, "Anyone can play rugby. They don't have to be the best athlete, the strongest body, the quickest person, they just have to love the sport and they will survive." Well, that about sums it up... |

| Well, here are the ladies I played with spring 2001. This was taken at the All Saints Tournament in St. Cloud, MN. Good weekend, some good fun. In the the back (l-r): Tera, Greenshirt, Retro, Brenda, Nancy, Red, Trie, Ham, Anne, Kelly cubed, and someone I don't know (whore). In the front, me (Buzz), BonBon, Soccer Mom, Amy A., Gina, and Spanky, laying across is Kelly squred. The girls in grey are whores. They played with us because we didn't have enough subs. Nice ladies! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Rugby Camp 2001. Theme: Survivor. I didn't last long, oh well, still had a lot of fun. My team, l--r: Smurf, Nancy, Retro, Gina, Spanky, and me, Buzz. Yes, lots of nicknames in rugby. Rugby camp was envisioned by our coach, Trie, as a "bonding" experience, I think. It involves fun activities, that year it was swimming in the seaweed infested lake, keeping a campfire going all night, and sculling. Rugby camp also involves initiating the "Rookies" of which I was part. We had to make up a rookie song, and skit, and other assorted activities ;) Check out the UWWRFC website! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| My 2002 team, most of the time, the University of Otago Club, Women's Golds. Some were a little unhappy to be photographed in red, Canterbury's colors, Otago is blue and gold, and we're in Otago, so we support Otago! I have a really bad memory, so I won't try to remember all their names. I had some good times with these girls though. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| In New Zealand, clubs even have clubhouses, so you don't have to change into your gear on the pitch. How nice! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| The Gold's in our usual jerseys, light blue and gold, the colors of the University of Otago. You can't tell, but it was freezing this day. New Zealand club rugby season is from March to August, right through the southern hemisphere winter. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A little New Zealand All Black's action! The All Blacks play Ireland, yes, they are there, the little guys in black are New Zealand, and the guys in green are Ireland. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
