Independent Reasearch and Externships
It is an excellent idea for student's interested in applying for graduate studies to register in an Independent Study or Externship program.  An Independent Study will provide student's with the ability to work hands on with professors, aiding the professor with their research.  This will provide the experience necessary for success in graduate school as you will be working withthe professor closely in a one-on-one or other very small group setting.  Depending on the area of interest it may be possible for the student to develop their own research design and implement that chosen idea.

An Externship allows the student the ability to work in a setting closely related to psychological professions.  This will allow the student to obtain not only credits towards their graduation, but also hands on experience in a pscyhological field.  This is an excellent addition to graduate school applications and can often help distinguish a good application from a great application.
