is it preferable to use ones fingers to eat ones meals as compared to the use of cutlery ie forks etc - is there any ruling on this point.

It is permitted to eat using cutlery, but superior to use one’s hands when reasonably possible, intending therein to follow the sunna of the Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace). [Nahlawi, al-Durar al-Mubaha fi’l Hadhr wa’l Ibaha]
