JULY ARTICLE

Asiatic lilies greeted the members of the Uxbridge Horticultural Society meeting on June 11th. Past president and owner of Keith’s Flowers, Keith Davidson, generously donated more than 100 lilies as a fund raiser for the Society. The ‘Best Iris Trophy’, donated by Brian Lobo, was awarded to David Rettalick, and Angie Andrus accumulated the most points in show.  David was our guest speaker last month and decided to join the society. Many of our new members entered their flowers and vegetables as well as trying their hands at flower arranging.  The Society has a ‘Novice Class for Designs’ for members who are beginners.    Cecil Lamerock was the guest speaker who shared his vast knowledge on roses with the members.  Since he has recently moved to our area and operates a nursery, he is well aware of the conditions in which we expect roses to grow.

Volunteers were busy at the end of May and beginning of June planting the many public gardens.  The most visible are those on the corner of Toronto and Brock Streets as well as in front of the library.  Less visible but equally well tended are those on Balsam Street, the hospital and Seniors’ Centre.

July 9th is the next meeting and show when the best Delphinium  trophy, donated by Marg and Ernie Saban, and the best Rose trophy, donated by Grace Gridley, will be awarded. The guest speaker, well known for his love of everything that grows – he advocates there are no bad bugs or bad ‘weeds’ - and his infinite knowledge, is Martin Galloway.  His topic will be The Naturalist’s Garden.

Guests are always welcome. Please join us for tea and dessert at 7.30 p.m. for an informal ‘chat’.  The meeting starts at 8 p.m.  For more information contact Bob Shepherd 852-7047 or email: uxbridgehortsoc@hotmail.com or visit us on the web at www.oocities.org/uxbridgehortsoc2002/index.html.
