JUNE ARTICLE

The Uxbridge Horticultural Society held the first flower show of 2003 in May.  The Flower Show judge, Barbara Twiner, congratulated the Society for the quality and number of entries.  The Best Flowering Bulb Trophy, donated by Cliff and Sylvia Robb, was awarded to Sharon Bognar.

David Retallick was our guest speaker, guiding us through the many facets of pruning, beginning with the variety of tools that can be used.  David has had many years experience in pruning and now owns his own business located north of Greenbank.  As a result of his speaking at our meeting he became a member and now we have a pruning expert always on hand.

May was also our first plant sale this year and many eager gardeners arrived early to take advantage of the plants grown by our members.  Look for our next sale at the Annual Show in August.

This year we experimented with a Spring Garden Tour and those attending were treated to both spring and early summer blooms. Due to the cool spring, some of the typical spring bulbs such as tulips and daffodils were still flowering.

June 11th is the Iris Show and meeting.  Our speaker is Cecil Lamerock.  Cecil and his wife own a rose and perennial business just south of Port Perry and he has been a guest speaker many times for our Society.  He is a Past President of the Canadian Rose Society and a Canadian Rose judge as well as director of the Greater Toronto Rose and Garden Society.
