The Uxbridge Horticultural Society welcomed twelve new members at the April meeting.   A Panel of Experts, expressly assembled by Vicki Taylor-Scott, helped get the growing season underway. Vicki introduced each of the three panellists and asked them to give a brief overview of their particular expertise before taking questions from the membership.  Dee Cashen informed us that the Township had experimental grass plots testing for alternative ways to combat weeds, Lina Lawes explained why a great many fish had died over the winter and Iain Pike encouraged the membership to use compost and mulch to help trees and shrubs through hot, dry, summer days.

The District 17 Annual General Meeting was held on April 12th at the Four Seasons Country Club in Pickering. The Uxbridge Horticultural Society had the highest attendance of all the twelve district clubs, sending 24 members.    The Yearbook once again took the first prize, Mildred Milne was awarded  ‘Best Houseplant in Show’ and Marg Collingwood placed second in a ‘special’, challenging flower arrangement class.

May 14th is our next meeting and the first of our monthly flower shows.  The ‘Spring Bulb Show’ will select the ‘Best Flowering Bulb’ for the Cliff and Sylvia Robb trophy.  Narcissus, tulips, lilac, forced branches as well as houseplants and vegetables will be among the 44 classes in the show to be judged.

One of the three annual plant sales will be held on May 24th at the Parkette beside Coffee Time between 9 a.m. and 1.p.m.

The membership fee for 2003 includes a yearbook with rules and regulations for the monthly shows and many helpful tips from experts and members.  We meet at 8.00 pm on the second Wednesday of each month, except in August. We encourage members to arrive at 7.30 pm for an informal “chat” when tea and “dessert” is available.  For more information contact Bob Shepherd 852-7047 or email: uxbridgehortsoc@hotmail.com or visit us on the web at www.oocities.org/uxbridgehortsoc2002/index.html.
