JDA projects in Nukus | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Aquaponics - 1. Fish swim in cans to the far right. 2. Fish dirty up the water with their waste. 3. Dirty water is fed through pipes and is used to water plants. 4. Excess water then is filtered back to the fish tanks. This "dirty water" is so rich in nutrients that plants can grow in many mediums that they would not be able to grow in otherwise - like sand, rocks, etc... whatever can be found locally! Also, we want to introduce fish protein back into the diet and this is a sustainable ecosystem in a place where there isn't much water to begin with AND the water is very contaminated. |

Sun-dried tomatoes for income generation... In peak season, we can buy fresh tomatoes very cheaply. They are then treated with sulfur (bottom left), cut in half, put on trays, and then dried on the roof These tomatoes dry very quickly in Nukus because the weather there is so hot and dry. The tomatoes are then sold overseas in Europe. This project generates income for some of the men in the community where there is unbelievable high unemployment! |

More of my favorite pics from Karakalpakstan...
These were taken at the Aral Sea Museum in Moynaq, a very sad, one room museum. These images are really... sad. The bottom painted map, showing how much the sea has shrunk... samples of canned fish that used to come out of there... the picture of a statue that used to be a symbol of this seaside town..
