Uzbekistan is a former Soviet republic located in Asia. Although their figure skaters have gone virtually unknown for many years, they have many talented skaters. The first major breakthrough for skaters of the independent Uzbekistan came at the 1993 World Championships when their ice dance team, Aliki Stergiadu and Juris Rasguljajev placed 10th. The degenerating training conditions and the eventual closure of the arena in the capital city of Tashkent were feared to hinder the development of the Uzbek figure skating program, but the opposite occured. Figure skating in Uzbekistan was brought into the world spotlight during the 1998-1999 season with the outstanding performances of Tatyana Malinina. Even with her success, information on Uzbekistan figure skating is very hard to come by. This website is my attempt to promote and inform skating fans about the many talented Uzbek skaters.
