vext

vext evolved from a mistake of identity. the end of a promising speedway career spawned the beginning of a new obsession. lead singer of vext, paul oughton, first played guitar in december of 1998 and later forming friends with a fellow guitarist, aimed to form a band. on their second attempt a bassist was found in the form of laura way, a fifteen year old brought up on old-school punk - her earliest memory being of her dancing around the living room to rock the casbah, security blankie in tow. after a few weeks of playing the band found a drummer via a music shop advert called dave draper. dave hailed from exeter, learning his trade on a drum set consisting of bins and a mechano bass pedal and his introduction to the band consisted of "i just want to make some noise, if none of you like it then you can all fuck off." after going through a second guitarist and deciding to stick as a three-piece, vext have been going strong with some much acclaimed gigs and two fast-selling eps. 'i am nothing' was released in late 2001 and 'a child's fascination with ugliness' following shortly in january 2003. the band have played with the likes of the ataris, throat, farse, the mingers, fig.4.0, no substance, to name a few and at ladyfest exeter.
