I am the great granddaughter of a man who was born a
slave...Levi Davis of Collinsville Mississippi.

My uncle was David Ruffin of the Temptations and he was
born near Collinsville/Meridian the son of Eli Ruffin and
Ophelia Davis Ruffin.

Eli (born ? 1850) was the son of Elias Ruffin probably
from Meridian Mississippi, and also had relatives in
Yauncey, Alabama.

My father says we are related to the Brutons and the
Lewis's.

Some of Ruffin siblings were Mary, John L., Ben, Jenny,
Lula etc... I also found out that Mr. Ruffin had three
wives, with my grandmother being the second one. So, he
must have come from good stock. Many of them were
teachers and preachers. Moore, Gina Ruffin

1939 - Jimmy Ruffin is born in Colinsville, Mississippi. The older
brother of the Temptations' lead singer David Ruffin, he will
become a singer on the Motown label and will best known for the
hit "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted." He will also record
"Hold on to My Love," "There Will Never be Another You," and
"I'll Say Forever My Love."

=========More on David Ruffin's line==========
Ruffin, David b. January 18, 1941 d. June 1, 1991
R & B singer and lead for the famed Motown group The Temptations. David Ruffin could not capitalize on his first solo singles for various labels, so he shared his private pain in the Temptations' biggest hits. He was born in Wyanot, Mississippi, on Jan. 18, 1941 to a family who had a little musical group called The Spiritual Living Four. Ruffin's relationship with The Temptations was a stormy one, but the marriage produced defining moments in 1960's soul, and his departure from the group in 1968 was one of the headlines of that year. The reaction of his solo recording "My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)" in 1969 suggested a solo star was born. But the song was really a metaphor for his personal struggle for a life rich and full of meaning. While there were minor hits later, Ruffin was caught between various writers and producers, and except for "Walk Away From Love" in 1975, he never tapped his enormous potential again. Never at ease, tall with black rimmed glasses and continued drug use, Ruffin was a loner who died of a drug overdose in 1991. At the time of his death he was declared a John Doe because he was not immediately identified. To many other music artists, David Ruffin's music influence is everlasting. Illinois

My father, Richard David Ruffin, was born on July 7, 1924 in Cairo, IL to Edward David Ruffin and Alpha Mae Curtis. Edward David Ruffin was the offspring of Richard David Ruffin and Mary Brown.

As the legend goes, my great grandfather, Richard David Ruffin, just showed up in Cairo, IL and started a family. He was most likely a run away slave who used the Mississippi/Ohio River waterways to get across the Mason/Dixon. They started and maintained a funeral business until recently (I've seen a picture of a wooden horse cart with Ruffin Funeral on the side).
