Richard Veal Carney RUFFIN

R.V.C. Ruffin was born about 1800 in Bertie Co, North Carolina. He was one of four sons of James and Margaret Veale Ruffin who came with them to GA around 1820.

We believe that the father, James, died right after 1820 census in Jones Co. His brother, Thomas, participated along with James Ruffin's orphans (probably his younger brothers) in the Lottery Drawings, and they did win....but we have never established if they actually followed through with the land.

Richard was married to Elizabeth Harrell on November 9, 1823 by Stephen Eilands, J.P. (Source: History of Jones Co, GA p. 849)

They were in Houston County in 1830 census, but R.V.C. lived most of his life in Carroll County around Villa Rica. Carroll County is on the Alabama border, several counties north of where his brothers moved in Upson and Talbot Counties.
