About The Annual Veteran's Christmas Dinner
at the Northport VA... |

In 2003, Joan Adams put together a last minute Christmas Dinner at the VA Medical Center in Northport for veterans who are homeless, live in shelters or are otherwise lonely or displaced for the holiday. We had a total of around 70 people for a good meal and a good time. It was a great way to spend Christmas; helping some people who truely deserve and need our help...
From my experience, I can tell you that it was fun and rewarding. What I ended up doing was setting up tables and chairs and the food stations, serving food when the time came and cleaning up after... It was surprisingly fun and turned out grand... Encouraged by the attendance and the great response from so many who were eager to help, we decided to try and make this an annual event. The 2008 Dinner was the best yet, with at least 250 people having a great dinner, set to some fantastic holiday piano music. You can see some photos from the 2004 , 2005 , and 2008 events posted on the site. This is a privately run and privately funded event, made up of volunteers who do EVERYTHING to make it a success. We are ALWAYS in need of volunteers and/or donations (food/money/supplies...) to make this a growing and worthwhile tradition. If any of you know of a veteran who is lonely or in need of a place to have a dinner on Christmas please let them know. It is open to all Veteran's (and their wives/husbands). It takes place on Christmas Day at 2pm at the Northport VAMC in building 5. Contact us if you're interested in attending or helping out. We'd love to have you there, and can always use the help. We also understand that this is the one day a year where people usually have plans, so, no pressure... Joan and Mike |
