VA Skyline Council's Own "Patriotism" Try-It"

To earn this Try-it, Brownies need to complete four of
the six activities listed.  Once you have done so, have
your leader contact the
VA Skyline council office to
order your Try-it badges.

1. THE AMERICAN FLAG:  Find out about the American flag. 

   What do the stars and stipes stand for?
   Why is the flag red, white and blue?
   How do you take care of the flag?
   How do you show respect for the flag?

   Learn how to fold the flag.

   Do an indoor OR outdoor flag ceremony.

   Learn the Pledge of Allegiance.

   Listen to the National Anthem.  What should you do when the National Anthem is played or sung?

   Learn a patriotic song you don't know.

2.  GET TO KNOW SOMEONE IN THE ARMED FORCES:  Invite someone you know (parent, grandparent, neighbor, family friend) who is serving or has served thier country to share their ecperiences. 

Think of some questions to ask them.  You may wnat to plan to share the patriotic song(s) you have learned.

OR

Adopt a person who is serving in the armed forces as your troop pen pal.  Share your troops' activites through letters and pictures.  Invite you pen pal to visit your troop meeting (if possible) when they are on leave.  You could plan a special ceremony for them. 

3.  PATRIOTIC HOLIDAYS:  Find out about these holidays - Independence Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, and Veterans Day. 

Plan a way to participate in teh celebration of one of these holidays.  You could do a flag ceremony for an event in your town or at a government or school building, march in a parade, display you flag, etc.

4.  BRANCHES OF SERVICE:  Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. 

Find out something about the flag, the song, and the uniform of each branch and find out what each branch is responsible for by: 

Inviting someone in the armed forces to come and talk to your troop.

Going to the library to find the information.

5.  TRIP:  Plan a field trip to a local museum or place of historical interest such as a battlefield, monument, navel shipyard, National guard/Army Reserve center.

6.  BEING AN AMERICAN:  Talk about what makes being an American special to you.

Choose pictures taht represent America and make a collage.

Draw a picture that represents America to you.
