WILZA CARLA
BIO BY ALISSON GOTHZ
She was an explosion of colours, feathers, wigs, make-up and glitter. Every hour of the day, every hour of the night. She was the Carnival personified. The ultimate queen of extravagance.

She was like a walking wedding cake with stars and angels following her through the streets. John Waters would have fall in love with her in a minute. Also Salvador Dali, Almodovar, Andy Warhol and Leigh Bowery.  She’s the fabulous Wilza Carla.

She was really young when she became the biggest star in musical theatre. She had a body and a face to die for, a beauty that made every woman jealous and every man falling in love with her. But her breakthrough was when she began putting up weight, and started doing movies, mainly comedies where her weight was always a subject of jokes. But she didn’t care about it. On the contrary, she accepted the fact that she was getting huge and played with it. She even posed naked twice. One of her most famous characters until now is Dona Redonda, a woman who “blows up” after eating too much. This scene is one of the most memorable (and famous) moments in the history of Brazilian television.

Wilza appeared in some of the most important films made in this country, proving that she was extremely talented, carismatic and versatile. She is a big part of the Brazilian popular culture.

The Carnaval in Rio was always Wilza’s biggest passion. She used to parade around the streets and contests with the most incredible costumes in the world. Dressing up for the Carnaval was a religion for Wilza.

During the 80’s she became a household name in television, as a judge in a popular singing contest. She was always dressed-up (as usual), with huge blonde wigs, fake eyelashes, unusual make-up and great clothes. A real eye-candy. In the early 90’s, she slowly fade way from the public eye.

Life hasn’t been very kind to Wilza nowadays. In a country which is famous for not having “memory”, always forgetting his great idols from the past, Wilza has to fight for space just to prove that she’s still alive.  But her fans will always remember her as one of the most beautiful, fabulous and talented creatures this country has ever seen. For us, Dona Redonda will never die.
