Yami was once a great Egyptian king but now lives with in the mellium puzzle.
Yami takes control over Yugi when Yugi is duelling or is in danger. He is more or less Yugi's guardian.
He knows very little about his past but with the aid of his friends he is slowly unraveling the truth of his past.
All we really know is that the key to his powers is tied to the mellium puzzle and the three Egyptian god cards.
In the Manga Yami is very dark, he makes people lose their minds and even kills them, of course it is because they threaten his friends.
