Memories of Peaches

Peaches has been our family dog for about 13 years. She had many funny habits that we all laughed at and she was a joy to everyone who knew her.

She died on Friday, October 29th, 1999. She was making her usual trip around the neighbourhood to visit and was struck by a car. Although we know she didn't suffer, it doesn't really help to know this. She was an important part of our family for 13 years and she will be missed dearly.

Some of my favourite memories of her are from her younger years. Shortly after our family got her as a puppy she went out on our family boat with us. First my older sister jumped in the water, then i jumped in the water, then my younger sister jumped in the water...then my mom jumped in the water... Peaches of course did not want to be left alone on the boat by herself so she decided to do as the rest of us did and...jump in the water. Now, I think she was a little shocked to be landing in water because she made a fast scramble back to the boat.

She was always there to greet us when we came home and to (attempt) to protect the home when we were not. Although, being a poodle, not many were scared of her. She really was "all bark and no bite." She would bark at strangers who came to the door, but always hiding behind me or my mom or my sisters while she did it...hoping we would protect her.

I will miss her always, and hope she has made it to doggy heaven.

Peaches and I were best friends since the day we got her. She would come everywhere with me as long as they allowed pets. Then I moved out of my moms place, and my mom wouldnt let me take her with me, but i got to see her every other day. I had a baby a year ago, and Peaches has always been jealous of other dogs or people around me, she wouldnt bite or anything, but she would try to climb in my lap while I was holding my daughter. 6 months ago I moved 4000km away, I missed her so much, the weekend i called and told my mom that i was moving back home, she told me that Peaches had been struck by a car and was killed, I felt so bad for not being there for her, but I am sure that she is having lots of fun with all the other furbabies at Rainbow Bridge

My Peaches was very intelligent. Here is a story that happened about 10 years ago.

We live in a small town with maybe about 1000 people in it, so we would just let Peaches out the door when she wanted out, and she would come back when she wanted back in, she would always stay in the yard.

My best friend lives about 2 blocks away from me, up on top of a hill, which is their driveway, and when we had to leave town to go to a funeral, they took care of Peaches while we were gone. A few weeks after we got back, I went for a walk up to the store, I usually take Peaches with me, but I hadnt taken her this time. Anyways, when I got back, my friends mom was at our place, and apparently Peaches had been let outside to do her business, but instead of doing what she had to, she went strolling up the sidewalk to my friends house in hopes that i might be there, she went looking for me.

I thought that was very smart of her to remember something like that. Ever since then, most of the time when i left and didnt bring her with me, my friend would be sitting in her living room, and just glance out the window and see Peaches waddling up their driveway to see if I was there.

Peaches sometimes liked to act handicapped. You see Peaches was a toy poodle, so she was pretty small. When she would go out in the winter, she would literally be buried in the snow sometimes trying to get through it. When I would take her for walks, she would get little snowballs stuck in her paws, and I can guess that that would get pretty cold. Anyways, she would start limping on the leg that didnt have the snowballs on them, all the while looking up at me as if to say "Carry me, my paws hurt". If I picked her up and carried her for a while, when I put her down, she would start limping again, and if I didn't pick her up right away, she would switch legs and start limping on the other leg instead, even though the other one had nothing wrong with it. Talk about a sympathy act, eh? It was cute.

I love you Peaches!

Rainbow Bridge Poem

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...
