Jeter Rocks Their World
He's king of the hill, top of the heap...
When Derek Jeter sits down to watch the videotape he made of the Yankee parade yesterday, the star of the show will be missing namely No. 2, Jeter himself. Throngs of Yankee fans roared with glee and abandon when the World Series MVP traveled up the Canyon of Heroes.
High-pitched squeals intermixed with booming bass voices could be heard chanting "MVP" and "Jeter" repeatedly. And the star of the show smiled, laughed and waved as women threw themselves against the barricades to get closer to him and men begged for his autograph. Some were luckier than others in garnering his attention. "I blew him a kiss, he blew a kiss at me, I blew it right back at him," gushed Jenna Bause, 19, a freshman at Dutchess Community College. "It's in my heart forever."
Young women lined the parade route, their faces painted with Jeter's No. 2 or the shortstop's last name.
Then there were the handmade signs that showed him some love:
"The MVP is the one for me. Derek ... I love U"
"MVP ... Most Valuable Player, MGG ... Most Gorgeous Guy"
"We love you Cutie Patutie, Go Jeter."
Ask any of the women to analyze Jeter's charms, and they got goo-goo-eyed over his hazel-green eyes, his derriere, his smile, and, yes, even his teeth. Others spoke of his modesty, humility and devotion to his parents and charity work for children. One pre-teen even praised his ability to chew gum while throwing a baseball.
A few said they had brushes with his greatness: One teenager attended the high school where his grandfather worked; another briefly chatted with a Versace-clad Jeter at one of his hangouts, Club One51.
The male admirers tended to speak more of Jeter's on-field accomplishments: numerous home runs, four World Championships and his status as the Most Valuable Player in this year's All-Star Game and World Series.
"We think of him as a ballplayer, a star athlete," said Bill McIntyre, 41, a paralegal from Clifton, N.J. "The only thing [women] care about is his buttocks. He makes a dynamic play and we yell, 'Yeah!'
"They [women] just wait for him to squat down for the next play," McIntyre said.
"He could have been a cute and ordinary person, and no one would have ever noticed," acknowledged Tammy Brathwaite, 17, of Brownsville, Brooklyn. "But now he has money and is a professional baseball player. His money adds to his cuteness."
"I'd trade places with him any day, preferably during the period when he was dating Mariah Carey," McIntyre said.
"As long as our girlfriends aren't putting his poster over their beds, we're fine," he added.
Ed Kozic, a 10-year-old from Raritan, N.J., who plays shortstop and wears No. 2 just like his idol, doesn't understand why girls scream for Jeter.
"I'm like, what's the big deal?" he asked.
