TEXT Discovering French Blanc I am excited that you have decided to continue your French studies. We will focus on five important areas during the year--reading, writing, listening, speaking, and culture-- to achieve the goals listed below. 1. Students will read basic informational texts, and extract main ideas from higher level reading activities. 2. Students will write short simple narratives in the present and past tenses. 3. To improve listening skills students will be exposed to tapes, videos, and conversations, and will comprehend information pertaining to basic personal needs, short routine telephone calls, and a variety of instructions. 4. TEXT Discovering French Bleu I am excited that you have decided to study French this year. I hope that you will not view French as a subject you must study to enter a university, but as an exciting journey into another language and culture leading to a greater understanding of English and how it functions. We will focus on five important areas during the year--reading, writing, listening, speaking, and culture --to achieve the goals listed below. 1. Students will read for instructional and directional purposes and to understand some items on menus, schedules, and maps. 2. Students will write basic autobiographical information, simple fixed expressions, and short messages. 3. To improve listening skills students will be exposed to tapes, videos, and conversations, and will comprehend short utterances, requests, and directions. 4. The student will express elementary needs in the form of isolated words and learned phrases. 5. Students will be taught within the framework of francophone culture in order to develop greater global awareness. Materials Come to class prepared. Each student should bring the following materials to class daily: Textbook - Workbook - one subject spiral notebook with perforated edges and pocket page - Pen/Pencil. Bellwork Each day there will be an assignment on the board or the overhead projector. Enter the room quietly, sharpen your pencil and start the work immediately. Do not wait for me to start class. Grading Your work will be assessed in a combination of ways. You will begin each nine week grading period with a 100 point participation/homework grade. Five points will be deducted for each of the following reasons: a) Incomplete homework assignment. b) Incomplete bellwork c) Unexcused tardy. d) Unexcused absence. e) Sleeping in class. f) Failure to bring supplies to class. Other assessments will include pop quizzes (based on homework/classroom assignments), and planned and posted quizzes and tests. The grading system will conform to the scale listed in the student handbook. Try to come to class every day! Makeups Students who are absent are responsible for all work missed. Please consult the board, other students, Voice Link (361-5900 - 9063) or me to determine what you need to do. This is your responsibility. We have an active French Club which we encourage all students to join at a cost of $3. TEXT Discovering French Rouge (Honors class) We will focus on five important areas during the year—reading, writing, listening, speaking, and culture—to achieve the goals listed below. 1. Students will read prose of several paragraphs in length, understanding main ideas and some support details. 2. Students will write simple letters, paraphrases, and summaries in several tenses. 3. To improve listening skills students will be exposed to tapes, videos, and conversations, and will sustain understanding of connected discourse. 4. Students will initiate, sustain, and close conversation in a variety of social situations. 5. Students will develop greater global awareness. |

TEXT Tresors du Temps Honors grading scale We will focus on five important areas during the year—reading, writing, listening, speaking, and culture--to achieve the goals listed below, and to prepare for success in the French SAT in November, and the French Language AP test which will be administered by the College Board in May of 2003 1. You will be able to understand spoken French in various contexts. 2. You will develop a French vocabulary sufficiently ample for reading newspaper and magazine articles, literary texts, and other non-technical writings. 3. You will express yourself with reasonable accuracy in both spoken and written French Our text will be Tresors du Temps which is designed to expand cultural and literary knowledge and reinforce grammar and vocabulary. We will write essays and use previous AP and National French Tests to practice all skills. From time to time I will expect you to read articles from Paris Match and Le Journal Français d’ Amerique and summarize them in French and English, orally and in writing. Other activities will include conversations, films and videos, and computer and group work. |
