Hiding In The Darkness

Edited by Dee

Please come now I think I'm falling
I'm holding to all I think is safe
It seems I found the road to nowhere
And I'm trying to escape
I yelled back when I heard thunder
But I'm down to one last breath
And with it let me say
Let me say

"I'm sorry Alexis, we did everything we could to save your sister. But it was too late." Tony said sadly, this was the part of his job he disliked most.

Alexis stood in stunned silence, myriad emotions flickered across her face. “No!”  She exploded. Alexis took a step forward, then stopped abruptly, shaking her head in confusion. Her sister was dead, she couldn't be dead! They had just found each other, surly fate wasn't that cruel. So many thoughts were racing at that moment, she didn't hear Ned’s guilty cry of sorrow.

"I'm so sorry!"  Sonny whispered sadly.

Alexis went very still and tears glistened bright in her eyes. "Don't!" She warned  him. "I don't want hear how sorry  you are that my sister is dead!" Alexis slumped down on the cold hospital floor and covered her face with her hands.

"It's always the innocent ones, right Sonny?  Never the ones that truly deserve it!" Alexis cried.

Sonny crouched down close to his best friend, at least in his eyes. His own tears streamed down his cheeks.  He had caused this. Another life had been lost for his cause.  That was story of his life. "If I could change this, I swear to you I would." He whispered heartbroken.

"Leave… I don't want you here!" Alexis sobbed.

“I'm so sorry!"  Sonny whispered.

"Please, let me help you." Sonny pleaded.

"Get away from me Sonny." Alexis warned in a deadly tone.

"I'm not leaving you here alone. I know how much you loved your sister."

"You don't know a damn thing about me and how I feel SONNY. Get the F### out of here!" Alexis yelled, wiping her face in her palms.

Hold me now
I'm six feet from the edge and I'm thinking
That maybe six feet
Ain't so far down

Sonny slummed away from her, numbed by her outburst. He knew that she was heartbroken by her sister’s death and wasn't thinking clearly.

Alexis stood, looking around the waiting room. She was alone, Ned had wandered off. Oh God Ned. Kristina never knew just how much he truly loved her." A storm of emotion swept through her. The walls were closing in, she couldn't breath.

"Kristina." Alexis whimpered her name.

Hold me now
I'm six feet from the edge and I'm thinking
That maybe six feet
Ain't so far down

Twenty minutes later Sonny walked back into the waiting room, with two cups of hot coffee.  "Alexis?" The waiting room was empty. "Excuse me, where did Ms. Davis go?"

"She left." a nurse replied.

"You just let her leave, her sister just died.. She shouldn't be alone." Sonny hissed furiously.

"I'm so sorry Mr.Corinthos." the nurse apologized.

"So am I." Sonny whispered, walking out of General Hospital in search of his soul mate.  "Were are you?" Sonny asked, looking skyward.

She wasn't sure why she had been drawn to this place again. Alexis climbed out of the car, in a zombie-like state. She walked to the bottom of the bluff and sat on the damp grass.  Her life was over, at least the life she had grown accustomed to.

Her sister had blown into her life, turning everything upside down.  A smile found it's way to her lips as memories of her and Kristina’s nightly chats flooded her mind. Kristina had this annoying ability to see through her well built walls.  And as frustrating as that was, it was the first time in her life where her feelings weren't so hidden. Tears filled her eyes again.   Kristina was gone, and it was because of her.

Sonny stood there watching her in silence.  He didn't know how to approach her. He knew that she was heavy-hearted; her only sister was dead, and it
was because of him.

"Alexis."

A whimper escaped her. Why did you come? “Go away Sonny!"

"No, I know you're angry and upset. But I'm not leaving you here alone." Sonny hesitated, looking at her with those dark, concerned eyes.

Alexis shook her head in disgust. "It's still all about you, right?" she asked her voice was laced with bitterness, both of them had a hard time recognizing it.

"I don't understand." Sonny whispered, approaching her slowly.

"Kristina is dead, and you're here why? Out of concern for me?… I don't think so, you're looking for my understanding. Hell you're probably even hoping for my forgiveness." Alexis mumbled.

"The only reason.. I'm here is because-- I need you to be OK Alexis." Sonny said, his voice catching in back of his throat.

I'm looking down now that it's over
Reflecting on all of my mistakes
I thought I found the road to somewhere
Somewhere in His grace
I cried out heaven save me
But I'm down to one last breath
And with it let me say
Let me say

Alexis threw her head back and laughed. "OK? I've never been truly OK in my life." She said through tears.

Sonny know what she meant by that, they were alike in so many ways. Their unsureness of their own ability to be happy and  just plain OK had brought them together. "I'm so sorry about Kristina-- I liked her
spunkiness." He admitted sadly, joining her on damp grass.

""I don't want to go down memory lane with you, especially about my sister. She is dead because of us!" Alexis said, standing.

"No Alexis.. she is dead because she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. This wasn't your fault." Sonny said, standing as well.

"She won't have been there, if I had just been honest with…" Her voiced trailed off.

"With who?" Sonny whispered, placing his hands on her shoulders.

"No!" Alexis shook his hands off her. "Leave Sonny!" She won't lose her child, it was the only thing she had left.

Sonny closed his eyes to gather his thoughts. "Why did you come back here?"

"I don't know, it just seem fitting to come back here."

"Hold me now
I'm six feet from the edge and I'm thinking
That maybe six feet
Ain't so far down

"Why?" Sonny whispered.

Alexis wiped her tears away, before speaking. "This is where it all began or ended depending on your point of view."

"Huh? Alexis you're not making any sense." Sonny said, worried about her
mental state.

"Of course I am !" Alexis defended her actions. "When you thought Carly was dead, we were here blaming ourselves. It is only fitting that we should return to this place. Another life has ended, we’re responsible for it. The only difference is there won't be any miracle this time. Kristina isn't coming back Sonny! " Alexis screamed. "Everything keeps coming back to that night!"

"Alexis." Sonny reached for her. She slumped backward not wanting his comfort.

"We thought we had killed Carly, and of course we didn't. It was just her way of getting your attention. You two deserve each other. And now that night has killed my sister." Alexis cried.

"Alexis please don't do this." Sonny begged.

"Don't what?  Tell the truth?" Alexis asked. "It's true Kristina wouldn’t have been in the warehouse if we hadn't slept together that night."

"What are you talking about?"

"She found out the truth.."

"What truth?"

"The truth that you didn't really want to know Sonny. You still don't want to know really... I can see it in your eyes." Alexis said, her voice was now clam.

Sad eyes follow me
But I still believe there's something left for me
So please come stay with me
'Cause I still believe there's something left for you and me
For you and me
For you and me

It was that moment he knew the truth. He had seen in her eyes and knew that she had been right, he didn't really want to know. "Alexis."

"Don't worry, We are going to be fine." Alexis said, walking passed him. She knew that he knew that he was father of her baby. She knew the moment it had dawn on him. She didn't look back,  She would never look back again on that time in her life.

There was a light hiding in the darkness, and it was growing stronger each day. Their child.

Sonny didn't stop her from going. His child was growing inside of her. He believed her. They would be fine. Because he wouldn't be around to ruin their lives. He knew that she would leave soon. And he wouldn't stop her from going or even try to find them. Sonny Corinthos the man that had to have everything his way, But he  didn't get to have it his way all the time.

There was a power higher and greater than he was. Love for his child and it's mother. Somewhere in the darkness of his life, he had managed to find a  moment of light.  "Alexis"
