New Years Eve 10 pm

How can I convince you that you're really not alone
And I know exactly what you're going through
Nothing is for certain, but there's one thing that I know
Never underestimate what love can do

Alexis Davis had just changed out of her party dress, into her favorite pair of jeans and a sweater. She was just about to order a pizza, when a knock at the door stopped her. She rolled her eyes hoping it wasn’t Jax. He’d been trying all evening to get her to come to the party at the club. It was the grand opening of his and Carly’s club and New Year’s Eve besides, but her heart just wasn’t in doing anything. She had decided to ring in the New Year alone. But then again, plans had been known to change, she thought with a smile when she opened the door, revealing Sonny.

“Hi,” Sonny greeted walking inside her penthouse.

“Come in!” she muttered closing the door.

They looked at each other taking in the other’s appearance. Sonny was wearing a dark suit. Alexis was sure he had plans for New Year’s Eve.

Sonny shook his head at her, knowing she was planning on spending the evening alone. “Why aren’t you dressed?” he asked, knowing she had been invited to the club’s opening.

Alexis raised her brow in annoyance, which Sonny thought was cute. He wasn’t about to let her get out of explaining herself tonight. He wanted to know why she was looking so sad.

“I’m not dressed, because I’m not going,” Alexis said, folding her arms over her chest to let Sonny know that she had made up her mind and no one was changing it, not even him.

“I see,” Sonny said after several seconds of silence. “Want to tell me why?”

She looked into his eyes and shrugged her shoulders. “Not really.” Sonny watched as she moved toward the couch. “Have fun at the party, Sonny!” Alexis said sitting down on the couch and propping her feet on the coffee table.

Sonny smiled at her. He knew damn well what she was doing, dismissing him like he had her in times past. But he wasn’t about to let her play that game with him. She would never win because he was the master.

Alexis waited for him to leave, but that didn’t happen. To her surprise he slipped off his coat, draping it on the back of her desk chair, loosened his necktie and unfastened a few buttons on his shirt.

“I think I can have fun here,” he said, now standing over her, his dimples showing brightly at the look of exasperation she was giving him.

Carly had changed her outfit for the third time. Nothing seemed to be right for tonight. She wanted to look perfect, since this was her big night when all of her hard work would be rewarded. She has no doubts that the club would be a success but she’d called anyway and Zander confirmed what she already knew - the club was packed. She’d been so tempted to ask if Sonny was there, but resisted the urge. She knew he would be there eventually if he wasn’t already and she had to look unbelievable! She looked at the clock and cursed, rushing back into the bathroom to finish dressing. Jax would be there to pick her up at any minute.

Jax wasn’t looking forward to tonight in the least. The last place he wanted to be was at the club, but he’d promised to take Carly and he was a man of his word. He pulled open the door, intending to leave, when he ran straight into her.

“Skye!” he said annoyed.

“Jax, do you have a second, I really need your help?” Skye walked past him into his suite. Jax rolled his eyes. Skye Quartermaine was definitely the most annoying woman he had ever met.

“I don’t have time for this Skye,” Jax said, not moving from the door. “It’ll have to wait until the morning.”

“It can’t wait Jax. It’s a matter of life and death.” Skye choked on a sob, not able to hold back her tears any longer.

Jax couldn’t stand seeing any woman cry and seeing Skye falling apart in front of him was no exception. Annoying or not, Lady Jane raised him better, he couldn’t just leave a woman in distress.

“What have you done now Skye?” Jax asked closing the door, knowing he wouldn’t be leaving anytime in the near future.

“It’s terrible! I’ve ruined everything!” she sobbed. “Once Alan finds out what I’ve done, he will never forgive me!”

“What did you do?”

“I don’t want you hating me too Jax. You’re the only real friend I have here,” Skye answered quietly, not sure if telling Jax was such a good idea now.

Jax really didn’t have time for this. He should be picking up Carly. “ Skye, just tell me, I can’t help if you don’t.”

“It has to do with Monica’s accident,” Skye started but stopped when she saw the look of disappointment in his eyes.

“Please tell me you had nothing to with what happened to her!”

“I didn’t do it on purpose!” Skye admitted. She’d been walking around in a guilty daze since Monica’s car accident.

“Oh God,” Jax whispered, now fully understanding Skye’s fears.

Alexis stood quickly, knowing that Sonny was up to something and she wasn’t about to let him have his way. Not this time. She was sticking to her original plan of spending a New Year’s Eve home watching old movies and eating popcorn and pizza. She frowned, remembering that she hadn’t ordered the pizza yet. “You’re going to the club Sonny, to show your support for Carly.”

Sonny smiled at the jealously creeping into her voice. He had to admit that he was a little jealous himself, since he wasn’t sure if Alexis’ sudden jealously of his ex-wife was because of her ex-husband or him. But that didn’t stop him from teasing her. “If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were jealous!”

Alexis met his eyes with anger shining in hers. “I’m not jealous of Carly.” At the tone of her voice, he knew he’d hit a nerve.

“If not Carly, then who?”

“No one….it’s silly,” Alexis stammered.

“Tell me.” Sonny urged her to meet his gaze by softly touching her chin.

Alexis’ breathing hitched with the contact of his warm finger on her skin. She took in a shaky breath. “I’m jealous of Kristina. Okay there, I’ve admitted it! I’m a terrible sister!” Alexis admitted all in one forced sentence.

“Breath Alexis.”

“Stop that!” Alexis said, hitting his arm playfully.

“I’m sorry, but you always get this really cute look on your face when I say that to you. It’s a real turn on.” Sonny grinned.

Alexis didn’t know how to take that statement. The fact that anything she did was a turn on was shocking, to say the least.

Sonny hadn’t meant for that last part to pass his lips, but he was relieved that it was finally out there. He watched the shock and wonder play out on her face

“You have no idea how beautiful you are, do you?” he whispered, running his fingertips over her surprised lips.

“Sonny, don’t…” Alexis didn’t want his pity.

“Don’t what?” he asked confused that she was becoming upset with him.

“Don’t say things that you don’t believe, especially not for my benefit,” she said, hurt by his actions.

Sonny was stunned into silence. She wasn’t taking him seriously. “Tell me what’s really going on.” Sonny wanted to know who had hurt her so much.

The hurt and confusion were clear in her eyes and she looked away from him. She closed her eyes feeling foolish about blowing up at him. “It doesn’t really matter. Please, just go!” she pleaded once more.

I want to show you
Even though there are no guarantees
Just let me hold you
Love can do most anything
If you just believe

Carly looked at the clock. It was just after eleven. She had given up on Jax and went to the club on her own, only to be disappointed that neither Sonny nor Jax had shown up.

“Why are you looking so sad, this place is packed!” Zander sat down at her table.

“I’m fine Zander and you’re right, this crowd is better than I’d hoped,” she admitted, offering him a fake smile.

Zander reached out and touched her hand, causing her to smile. Zander had been a one of the few people that hadn’t turned his back on her.

“I’m fine Zander, really.”

Zander knew better. “You were hoping that Sonny would be here?”

Carly gave him a hard look, but her eyes softened. Zander definitely knew her well. “I was hoping he would come. I wanted him to see what I’ve done without him.”

“Hoping to rub his nose in it, huh?” Zander said with a laugh.

“I guess I was.” Carly looked at her watch again.

“But now you’re not?”

“No, I still want him to see the club and how great it is but I don’t feel this need for his approval anymore.” Carly was proud of herself, she was finally letting go of Sonny. She knew that life would continue without him. “ I wonder what happened to Jax?”

“I’m sure he’ll show up,” Zander said rising. “I’d better get back to work though. My boss is a real slave driver,” he teased.

“Cute!” Carly rolled her eyes. She looked around the club until her eyes fell on the dance floor and the couples dancing. She was surprised to find her thoughts going back to her partner and his whereabouts.

“Where are you?”

*****

Jax closed the guest bedroom door. Skye had finally fallen asleep. He felt really bad for her. She had told him everything about Monica’s accident. He was feeling a little guilty about the accident himself. It happened the same day Jax had told her that they could only be friends.

Skye had gone to the nearest bar, gotten drunk and while she was driving home, she’d run Monica’s car off the road. She’d panicked and left the scene but she had been beating herself up for the last couple of weeks about it. She couldn’t live another day without telling someone what she’d done. Lucky me, Jax thought, feeling terrible about standing up Carly. He looked at the clock - 11:35 - there was still time, he thought, rushing out the door.

“I’m not leaving until you talk to me,” Sonny said, approaching her.

“I had this huge fight with Kristina. I was so terrible and unfair to her Sonny!”

Now they were getting somewhere. She was upset about her sister, Sonny thought with relief. “What did you two fight about, if you don’t mind me asking?” he questioned, taking her hand and leading her to the couch.

“We had a fight about Ned. I told her he would hurt her. She accused me of being jealous,” Alexis said, her eyes closed.

Sonny waited for her to continue but she didn’t. “So, was she right?”

“I didn’t think I was jealous. But seeing them together tonight, I realized that she’d been right. I was jealous and I have no right to be. I’m the one who walked out on Ned and he has every right to see other people. Granted, I’d prefer it wasn’t my baby sister.”

They sat in silence for several minutes. “You sure, you don’t want to go out with me?” Sonny asked, touching her chin.

“I’m sure, besides by the time we get there, it’ll be midnight,” she said checking the clock.

Sonny frowned. He really had hoped to make it to the club. He was proud of Carly and all that she’d accomplished and he wanted to congratulate her on her big night.

“I’m sorry, I made you miss the party,” she whispered, noticing the look on his face.

“It’s okay. I wasn’t really looking forward to it. I’m glad things are going well for Carly but she didn’t need me there,” Sonny said never taking his eyes off hers. “I’m exactly where I want to be tonight,” he added, moving a piece of her hair behind her ear.

It can take you to the highest high
Make you sacrifice it all
Love is unpredictable
It can change your life forever
Or it may never hear your call
Love is unpredictable
Na na na na na
Love is unpredictable

“Really?” she asked shyly remembering his earlier words.

*****

Jax walked into the crowded club and looked around for her. He didn’t see her and made his way toward Zander.

“Hey Zander. Where’s Carly?”

“She left,” he yelled over the music.

“She left? Why would she leave?” Jax asked, feeling terribly disappointed.

“Don’t know really. One moment she was here, the next minute she was gone. Didn’t say a word to me about leaving.”

“I see.” Jax turned and headed toward the door.

“She was really bummed that you weren’t here,” Zander yelled.

“Damn!” Jax cursed, checking his watch. Only ten minutes before midnight.

“Where are you?”

We don't need to justify,
we don't need to wait
All will be revealed to us in time
And if you intellectualize the meaning of this fate
You may never know what we could find

Carly walked along the docks. It was almost midnight and she was alone. Was this her destiny?

“Carly?” Jax called from the top of the stairs.

“Jax!”

“I’m sorry about not picking you up, but something really important came up.”

“I see,” was all she said.

“I’m really sorry,” he said again coming to stand directly in front of her.

“Don’t worry about it,” Carly said rubbing her arms.

“It’s really cold out here!” Jax stated, wrapping her in his coat.

“What are doing out here?” Carly asked, her voice suddenly angry.

“Looking for you,” Jax said honestly, reaching for her hand and holding it tightly in his.

“Why?”

“I wanted to spend the New Year with my partner!” Jax said softly, bringing his face closer to hers, their faces now only inches apart….
