Chapter 5

'"I can't believe we are finally together again. I never thought we would see each other again," Carly admitted sadly.

"I know. Mitch did everything in his power to keep us apart. I'm sorry I let him win for so long," Skye said, the same sadness and regret clearly heard in her voice.

"There was nothing you could have done," Carly said, squeezing Skye's hand gently.

"I always wondered if I could have done more... I let you down, sis." Skye slipped off the bed and walked to the window, looking out into the darkness. " I knew the kind of man he was. I shouldn't have left you with them."

"Skye, look at me," Carly begged.

Skye inhaled sharply, before facing her sister. Their sad eyes locked and held. "Don't do this to yourself, we both did what we had to... to survive!"

The words brought tears to both of their eyes. "I was older, it was my job to protect you, "Skye sobbed softly.

"Sh- Skye, please don't cry!" Carly cried, her emotions overwhelming her as well. "It wasn't your responsibility to protect me. It was Mama's -- she failed us both!"

"I knew how Mama was with Carly. She didn't give a damn about herself, much less us. We were on our own. "

"I know. She was a horrible mother -- how she and Mitch were able to adopt us is beyond me," Carly said, rolling her eyes in disgust.

"Tell me about it, they weren't fit to raise anything, especially not children," Skye agreed.

"Skye."

"Yeah?"

"Let's leave the past, where it belongs...okay?"

Skye sighed, "I‘ve tried, but it doesn't want to stay in its place."

"Thinking about things you can't change isn't good."

Skye nodded her head, knowing that Carly was right. "I’ll try."

"Me too.," Carly whispered.

The sisters shared a smile, their first one in ages. Their love for one another hadn't been lost in the years of pain and misunderstanding.

"So tell me about you and my brother," Skye asked suddenly.

The questioned surprised Carly so; she just stared at Skye wide eyed.

"Well?"

"A.J. and I were married -- he is Michael's father," Carly whispered.

"Did you love him?" Skye was curious.

Carly looked away from Skye's eyes, before answering the question. "No, I didn't."

"I see."

"Do you?" Carly teased. She hardly doubt that Skye understood. Hell, she didn't understand herself.

"My grandfather said that you were after his money, and you wormed your way into A.J.’s life," Skye explained, what she thought she knew.

Carly laughed amused. "Edward, didn't waste anytime telling you, about me I see."

"Then it's true, you used my brother?"

Carly's brow raised in anger and hurt. "No I didn't use A.J. -- if anything, we used each other."

"How so?" Skye asked, sitting back on Carly's bed.

"It's a long story. But A.J. and I were both in bad places in our lives. We got together. Which only made things worst for both of us, Michael is the only good thing to come out of our relationship."

"If that's true, then why did A.J. risk his life to save yours?" Skye asked.

Carly had no answer. She had been wondering the same thing. "I don't know."

"What about Sonny?"

"What about him?"

"Do you love him?"

Carly smiled, "Yes, I love him. But that isn't enough."

"Huh?"

"Never mind." The last thing Carly wanted to do was talk about Sonny, with Skye. She was suspicious of her sister’s motives. She had seen the looks between her husband and sister.

"Well, it’s getting late and you need your sleep. I should go."

"Yes I am sleepy," Carly whispered, suddenly feeling the distances between them returning. Skye felt it too, but didn't know what to do to stop it.

"I’ll be back in the morning."

"I'm going home in the morning," Carly said.

"Oh," Skye whispered. "Good night, Sis."

"Good night," Carly whispered, after Skye had left.

Skye walked down the hospital corridor. Her thoughts were scattered in a millions pieces. She didn’t hear the footsteps behind her.

She screamed when he touched her shoulder. “Sonny!” Her hand went to her chest, to settle her raging heart. “You scared me!”

“I’m sorry!”

“What the hell are you doing, following me?” Skye asked, looking around.

“I warned you to stay away from Carly!”

“What?”

“Don’t be play games with me, Skye. I saw you leave her room.” Sonny said, watching her face closely. “What’s going on between you and my wife?”

“I don’t answer to you, Sonny. If you want to know what’s going on between Carly and me, you’ll have to ask her yourself. Now if you will excuse me . . .” She jerked her arm away from his tight grip.

“Did you tell her, about us?” Sonny whispered.

Skye stopped dead in her tracks. She turned back to him. “No, I didn’t. If you want Carly to know about us, then you will be the one telling her. I won’t ever tell her,” Skye promised.

“Thank you.”

“Goodnight Sonny.” She smiled at him.

Sonny returned her smile. “Goodnight Skye.”

Mitch Benson looked out into the night. Tomorrow he would be reunited with his daughters. He couldn’t wait to see their sweet faces… well that wasn’t all he couldn’t wait to see.
