Praying Beside You
by Dani Beth

Cracking an eye open, she groaned and rolled over, hand flopping down on Sonny's chest. He rewarded the feeling with a noise that sounded like an 'Oomph' and rolled over.

Alexis gave a laugh and then got out of bed, pulling on a robe. Going to the bathroom, she started to brush her teeth. Standing in the doorway, she looked down at him as he still slept.

Sighing as she sat on the bed, almost ready for the morning, she brushed some hair from her eyes and stared intently at him. Shaking his shoulder, she let her hair brush against his chest.

''Sonny, wake up,'' Alexis whispered into his ear. ''C'mon baby.''

''Too early.''

''No it's not.''

He nodded and with one swoop, flipped her to her back and braced himself over her. ''So, Lex, what's up? Why you want me out of bed so soon?'' Breath hot on her neck, he nibbled on the soft spot below her ear.

Making a throaty sound, she traced lines on his chest and then grinned. ''Because it's Sunday.''

''So?''

''And...we're going to church.''

This made him stop. ''Huh?''

''I...um, had a talk with the Priest of St. Joseph's. I believe his name is Father Matthews? Anyway, it was yesterday that I had this talk and I might have mentioned that we might be there today.''

''And how, exactly, did that get into conversation?''

Nibbling the corner of her lip, Alexis sighed. ''Because he knows that I'm your lawyer and...Oh, don't you go and give me that look Michael Corinthos. Everyone knows that I'm...was...your lawyer. Anyway, he asked about you and said something about you not being in church lately and then...''

''You told him that you'd make sure I'd be in church,'' he finished for her.

''See? We're made for one another. You just completed my sentence. That's a sign,'' she told him, changing the subject.

''Subtle, Counselor, very subtle.'' Groaning as he lifted himself up, he smirked. ''You wore me out last night.''

''Well, I'm not walking bow-legged, so you didn't your job,'' she quipped and let out a small squeal as he grabbed her around the waist and lifted her up some.

''Guess I'll have to change that, huh?''

''Yes,'' she told him primly. ''But not right now, because I do not want to be late for church.''

Watching her silently as she got out of the limo, Sonny let out a sigh and followed her. The bright sun blinded him for a moment, but he shielded his eyes and was aware of all the people that were watching them.

And, as usual, Alexis was ignoring them and smiling over at him.

''You're the smart one,'' he told her, leaning in and breathing in the scent of her.

''Oh, and why's that?''

''You have sunglasses on.''

''Told you.''

Throwing her a mock glare, he quickly changed it to a smile. At first, he thought that she was going to wear one of her signature suits, but to his delight, she wore a white dress with small flowers on it. Her strappy sandals gave her a few inches and let her look him in the eyes.

Shouldering her purse, Alexis gave a tsk and adjusted his tie, letting her hands fall palms down on his chest.

''What's up Counselor?''

''What are you thinking about?''

''You.''

A smile curved her lips. ''Flatterer.''

''Only to you.''

She laughed and hooked her arm through his and led him into the church. Entering, she was in awe of the size and stared at Sonny with wide eyes.

''What a beautiful place.''

''Yes, it is.'' Going down one row, he stopped at a pew and on the wall was a gold plaque that read Corinthos.

''You have your own pew?''

''When you make generous donations, the Church likes to thank you,'' he told her calmly.

Nodding, she slipped in first and then watched as Sonny bent down on one knee and made the sign of the cross before sitting next to her.

Taking her hand, he firmly held it. A look in his direction showed his face set and looking toward the front.

It had been long for her. The church was large, yet stuffy. She found herself squirming when they kneeled. She didn't know the prayers, so she just bowed her head and mumbled a few words that she recognized.

As the rest of the congregation filed out to the bright sun, Sonny and Alexis stayed behind, holding hands and looking to the front.

It wasn't until a few of the older church goers were gone or talking among themselves that the two rose and walked to where Father Matthews stood, waiting.

''Mr. Corinthos, Miss Davis,'' he said warmly as they stopped in front of him.

Kissing his cheek hastily, Alexis whispered, ''I'm gonna look around.''

With a look at her, Sonny turned back. ''Father Matthews, I want to...''

''No need,'' the older man stopped him, leaving Sonny stumped.

''I would like to make a donation to the church.''

The Priest hesitated.

Narrowing his eyes, Sonny told him, ''My money is clean if that's what you're worried about.''

Bristling visibly, he glared at the younger man. ''That is not what I was getting. It's just...Mr. Corinthos, it has been years since you gave your last donation. I was hesitant because...'' he trailed off. ''Actually, I don't know why.''

At his bluntness, Sonny nodded. Looking over at Alexis who was staring at statue of Mary, her arms wide open and bowing her head, he smiled. ''I believe she's the one.''

''And what makes Miss Davis so special?''

''She's a challenge. I love that about her. Sure, Carly was a challenge too, but not the way Alexis is. She looks me straight in the eye and tells me how it is.'' He smirked. ''That's what I love about her.''

''She loves you too,'' Father Matthews remarked, looking over at the woman that was the topic of their conversation. ''Yesterday when we were talking, she was adamant about you going to church. I wasn't clear about why at first.''

Bowing his head, Sonny sighed. ''I was with Lily the last time I came here.''

''I'm aware of that.''

''Alexis takes care of me.''

''I'm aware of that too.'' Father Matthews shifted slightly and a smile crossed his face. ''Will we be seeing you next week?''

Cocking his head, Sonny briefly darted his eyes over to Alexis, who was staring at the pair, a slight grin in her eyes. Back to the Priest, he only nodded.

Holding out his hand, he smiled at the firm handshake between the men. Alexis was at his side then, hand on his arm.

''Until next week, Father.''

Taking a sip of her orange juice at brunch later that day, Alexis lifted an eyebrow. ''How much are you going to donate?''

''A generous amount.'' Sighing at her look, Sonny shook his head. ''I don't like talking money, Lex.''

''Okay.''

Snorting, he ate some eggs and stared at her thoughtfully.

Squirming under his scrutiny, she murmured, ''Did you and Father Matthews have a good talk?''

''Yes. It was quite productive.''

She smiled. ''Oh, how wonderful.'' Cutting her pancakes with her fork, she said with a soft glance up at him, ''So, we're going back next Sunday?''

''Yes.'' Clearing his throat, he brought his napkin to his face and then asked, ''Something's been on my mind since this morning.''

''Oh, what's that?''

''What did you mean that you were my lawyer?''

Choking on her pancakes, she swallowed some orange juice and coughed. ''Um...''

Shaking his head, Sonny told her, ''Don't skirt around it, Alexis.''

''I don't want to be your lawyer anymore. I want to be your...lover or whatever you want to call me. Just as long you don't call me your girlfriend, since I never liked that word, we'll be fine.'' Alexis sighed. ''To be your lawyer is an extremely pressing job. I don't want to come home and be mad with you about something you did. I will still give you legal advice, but not as your attorney.'' She mumbled something after that, which made him glare.

''What was that?''

''I said, Scott Baldwin and I have been talking, and he wants me to come and join him at his law firm.''

''Are you going to?''

''I don't know.''

''It's up to you.''

Startled, she told him, ''I thought you might object.''

''No, that's what you do,'' he smirked. Shaking his head, Sonny told her, ''It's your life. If you want to work with Scott Baldwin, go for it.''

Face brightening, Alexis reached her hand over the table, grabbed his tie, brought him to her and kissed him. Pulling back, she said, ''Thank you,'' before feeling his lips descend on her's again.
