Chapter 21

The room was drafty and cold with an acrid scent that filled the air.  He heard hostile voices.  He didn't have to open his eyes to know they were talking about him.  Sonny surfaced to consciousness, taking in his surroundings, as memories of what had happened came rushing back to him.

He moaned and coughed.  "Carly."  He called for her, as the hazy fog closed in around him.  He tried to fight it but it was comforting and warm.  He submitted to it.

Carly was pacing around the room.  She was terrified for herself and Michael...and Sonny.  Tears came once again, as the sound of the gunshots echoed in her ears, accompanied by the image of Sonny falling to the ground.  She wiped away the tears.  He had to be okay.  She couldn't lose the love that she had fought for so long but had now finally accepted.  "Please be okay Sonny!"  she prayed.

Carly went to the door, knowing it was locked, but tried it anyway.  She became furious and started pounding and screaming for anyone to come to her rescue.  "Helena, let me out of here!  Give me back my baby NOW!"  Carly pounded even harder, with renewed determination.

She finally got tired and fear overtook her once again.  She couldn’t keep the tears at bay any longer and they flowed freely down her cheeks.  Her knees grew weak and she slid down the door, bringing her knees up to her chest.  She hugged them tightly, rocking herself gently.

Helena rushed to Michael’s room upon hearing his gentle cries, which she had grown accustomed to and at times even craved.

"What's wrong?  Did your Mommy frighten you?" she asked lifting the baby from, what once had been, his uncle’s crib.

Michael quickly calmed down.  "That's my sweet prince," Helena soothed, as Michael discovered the Cassadine medallion she wore.  He tugged on it, fascinated by the shiny piece of metal.

"When you’re older, you will have one of these, like a true Cassadine," Helena promised, returning him back to his crib.

Helena closed the door and summoned Ari.

"Yes Madam?"

"Bring me my granddaughter at once," Helena demanded, an evil smile curving her lips.

Jax sat right behind the defendant’s table.  Alexis could feel his eyes on her back and it was making her a little nervous.  She looked down at her paperwork once more, making sure she had everything in order.  Finding everything as she had left it, not two minutes ago, she turned around slightly and scanned the courtroom looking for Luke.

She spotted him near the back.  He looked awful.  Her heart ached for him, knowing how much he loved his son.  Alexis was sure the Judge would deny bail and Luke would not take it well.  Alexis’s  eyes landed on Emily Bowen.  She noticed how pretty she was, but there was also something very familiar about her.  She couldn't put her finger on what at the moment and didn't get a chance to ponder it longer, as a handcuffed Lucky was led into the courtroom by the bailiff.

The presiding judge entered the courtroom a few moments later and the hearing got underway.

Dara Jenson stated all the reasons why Lucky Spencer should remain in custody until the trial.   And Alexis countered with all the reasons that he should free.

Jax watched his wife in action and smiled with pride.

Alexis returned to her seat after making her argument on Lucky’s behalf and Jax gave her a reassuring smile, that calmed her slightly.  She knew before the judge ever spoke that she had failed her young client.

"The defendant will remain in custody until the trail," the judge ordered.

"NO!  You can't do that!" Emily sobbed, standing from her place in the gallery.

The Judge pounded his gavel against the table.  "Order in the court!”

"You can't keep my boy locked up!"  Luke joined in Emily’s protest, rushing up the aisle but stopped short when he saw the look Alexis sent him.

"Order in the Court!!" Judge yelled, banging his gavel repeatedly.

Alexis briefly closed her eyes in despair before she rose and turned to Emily and Luke encouraging them to sit down and remain silent.  She needed them to understand that they weren’t helping Lucky by enraging the judge.

The judge ended the proceedings once order had been restored and Lucky was led out of the courtroom.  Alexis turned her attention back toward Luke.

"Luke, I warned you that this might happen!"

"How long until the trial?"

"Three weeks," Alexis said, as gently as possible.

"THREE WEEKS!" Luke yelled, incredulous.  His son would have to stay in jail for 3 weeks and probably for the duration of the trail as well.  How did this happen?  When did things get so far out of control?

"I can't ##cking believe this!" Luke cursed, pacing around her.

“Yelling isn't going to help!" Alexis said, her voice rising in frustration.

He stopped and looked at her.  He sighed.  "I know and I really do appreciate what you’re doing for my boy."

"I want to help but we need to find another suspect.”

"Helena," Luke said.  He spotted Johnny getting entering the courtroom and approached him.

"Where’s Sonny?" he demanded.

"I don't know.  I was hoping that he was here," Johnny said, searching the lingering crowd for his missing boss.

"Sonny’s not here.  You mean, you’ve lost him?  Have you talked to Carly, I'm sure she knows where he is," Luke reasoned.

"I don't know Mrs. Morgan’s whereabouts either."

"WHAT!" Luke and Alexis yelled in unison.

Johnny lowered his head in shame, knowing when Mr. Corinthos found out that Carly was missing, he would most likely be out of a job...or worse.

Lucky laid in his cell looking up at the ceiling.  He couldn't get his father or Emily’s faces out of his thoughts.  He was worried about Emily, she looked near the breaking point.  His thoughts ended when he heard footsteps approaching.  He sat up and waited for them to reach his cell.

He smiled for first time in a long time.  "Emily."

"I'm sorry," she sobbed.  "This is all my fault!"

"No, it's not Em," Lucky assured her.  He took her hand through the metal bars and squeezed it gently.

Her tears filled eyes met his sad ones.  "I love you Emily."

"You shouldn't.  Look at where it's gotten you!" she said backing away from him.

"I'm sorry Lucky," she whispered before running down the corridor away from his cell.

"Emily!  Wait don't go!” Lucky pleaded, as a single tear slid down his cheek.
